Ramblings: Rantanen Returns to Colorado; Role Changes for Nelson & Benn; Sneaky Adds in Holmstrom, Samberg & Gauthier (March 17)

Lucas Raymond snapped a 10-game goal drought with a wonderful goal against Vegas, giving him six points in his last five games. The 23-year-old winger leads the team in scoring with 69 points – 10 points clear of second place Dylan Larkin. Nice.

Against a Golden Knights team on the second half of a back-to-back set, Petr Mrazek stopped all 18 shots he faced for his first shutout of the season. This was Mrazek's third straight start. Not only has playing consistently helped him find a groove, but it shows that the Red Wings trust him to lead a difficult push for the playoffs. Considering Cam Talbot had allowed 4+ goals in three of his last four starts, it's no surprise that Mrazek was given this opportunity. Beware that Detroit only plays two games next week, against two good teams in Washington and Vegas, so there's no rush to add Mrazek to your fantasy roster.

Victor Olofsson got off to a promising start this season thanks to a prominent power-play role. Unfortunately, recent months have seen him in a depth role without much power-play opportunity, which explains why he has just three points in his last 18 appearances.

Sunday's potential playoff preview between Dallas and Colorado was won by the Avs' top guns. Cale Makar scored the overtime winner to cap off a three-point affair, Valeri Nichushkin posted two points, and Nathan MacKinnon got the game-winning assist. Shot totals were lopsided in this one because Colorado had five power plays to Dallas' one.

Brock Nelson tallied a helper on Sunday's game-winning goal, which is just his second point through five appearances with Colorado. He's averaging under 17 minutes a night with the Avalanche – a sizable step down from the 19:21 he was seeing in New York earlier this year. More troubling is the fact that Nelson was bumped down to PP2 while Jonathan Drouin rose to PP1 on Sunday. Nelson had been skating on the top unit over the past three games, during which time Colorado went 0 for 6 with the man advantage. Now, Nelson hasn't been overly reliant on power-play production in his career, so he can still have an even-strength impact – especially with strong linemates like Nichushkin and Drouin. However, considering Nelson has averaged 2.5 to 3.0 shots per game in recent years, it's discouraging to see that he has just four shots total through five games with Colorado. There's still time for him to settle in, but I'm not overly optimistic about his fantasy value for the rest of this season.

After going pointless in his three games off the top power-play unit, Drouin returned to PP1 and immediately registered a power-play helper on Sunday. He added a goal to finish this one with two points.

Martin Necas had a game-high eight shots on net. He's averaged 3.05 shots per game since arriving in Colorado – a good step up from the 2.31 he put up earlier in the season with Carolina.

Mikko Rantanen had a relatively quiet return to Colorado, posting an assist and two shots through 17 minutes of action. He's up to four points in four games with the Stars.

After missing two games with a facial injury, Roope Hintz returned to the lineup beside Rantanen and Jason Robertson. The trio connected for a pretty goal on Sunday.

After scoring on Sunday, Robertson is up to nine goals in 11 games since the Four-Nations break. No one in the league has more tallies during this stretch.

Jamie Benn's assist on Sunday was just his third point in his last eight games. With Dallas strengthening its offense ahead of the trade deadline, Benn has been forced into a reduced role. Since January 28th, he's averaged less than 14 minutes a night, seeing just 30% of the team's total power-play time. Prior to the 28th, he was seeing 16 minutes a night with a 53% share of PP time. With less ice time, he hasn't been able to put the puck on net very often. Benn has just 20 shots in his last 17 appearances.

Since he faced just 21 shots in a shutout victory on Saturday, Igor Shesterkin got the call again Sunday as the Rangers are in a tight race for the playoffs. In a tough situation with no rest, Shesterkin had a forgettable outing, allowing three goals on 23 shots.

Will Cuylle extended his point streak to three games with New York's lone goal on Sunday. Skating beside Artemi Panarin and Vincent Trocheck during this stretch has certainly helped.

Cuylle also racked up five hits against Edmonton. Only two players in the league – Kiefer Sherwood and Mathieu Olivier – have more hits than Cuylle, who is averaging 3.66 per game this season.

With an assist on the game's opening goal, Leon Draisaitl extended his point streak to 18 games. Yes, you read that right. 18 games. No one else has had a longer streak this season.

Partner in crime Connor McDavid extended his own point streak to a modest 11 games.

Ryan Nugent-Hopkins had been in the doghouse with most fantasy managers heading into Sunday's clash with New York. He came into this game with just two points in his previous nine appearances. That's not the kind of offense you expect from a piece of Edmonton's star-studded power play. RNH got back in our good graces with an excellent performance at a crucial juncture of the fantasy campaign, racking up three assists on Sunday. His overall point pace of 52 looks bad, but it's weighed down by a slow start to the year. He's been scoring around a 62-point pace since late-November.

After getting banged up in Friday's game against the Islanders, Zach Hyman wasn't available for Sunday's tilt with the Rangers. He participated in Sunday's morning skate and was even listed as a game-time decision, which suggests the injury he's dealing with isn't too serious and that he shouldn't be sidelined for too long.

With Hyman out, Corey Perry stepped up to Edmonton's top power-play and scored his 15th of the season. Again, Hyman probably won't be out long, but if he ends up missing another game, keep an eye on Perry.

After outshooting Florida 12-1 in a scoreless first period, the Isles were outscored 2-0 in the second. In the third, NYI took advantage of a tired Panthers team, scoring four unanswered to win this one in regulation.

Making his second start as a Panther – his first being a shutout – Vitek Vanecek had a solid outing, stopping 30 of the 33 shots he faced. He struggled in San Jose but seems to be a more reliable option in Florida thanks to a much better team in front of him.

Gustav Forsling's assist disrupted an eight-game point drought. Offense hasn't come as easily for Forsling this season as he's pacing for just 28 points – a sizable step down from the 40-point pace he posted in three-straight seasons prior to this one.

Sam Reinhart's power-play tally was just his second goal in his last 14 games. His overall numbers are impressive, but it is a bit worrying that 19 of his 33 goals came in his first 27 appearances. His recent numbers are much more modest as he has 14 goals in his last 41 games.

Another game without a point for Seth Jones, who has just one assist through eight games for Florida. He's been munching minutes since Aaron Ekblad's suspension, seeing 27-28 minutes a night. Jones should continue getting PP1 opportunity with Ekblad out the rest of the season, so although early results haven't been promising, I wouldn't give up just yet.

The Islanders used the rare double defenseman setup against Florida on Sunday, with both Tony DeAngelo and Noah Dobson skating on PP1. They went 0 for 3 with the man advantage, so it's hard to say whether they'll stick with this strategy on Tuesday against Pittsburgh.

With a pair of assists on Sunday, DeAngelo has four points in his last five outings.

Dobson was all over the scoresheet Sunday, racking up a goal, four shots, three blocks and a hit through 22 minutes of action.

Simon Holmstrom's empty netter Sunday gives him five points in his last eight games. That might not sound all that impressive, but the 23-year-old winger has been getting ample opportunity lately. During this stretch, he's skating over 20 minutes a night and seeing 60% of New York's time with the man advantage. He found himself beside Bo Horvat and Kyle Palmieri on Sunday. I know it was only an empty netter, but let's see if Sunday's goal helps him build confidence so he can make the most of this opportunity.

Ilya Sorokin posted a save percentage above .900 for a fifth straight game. He's been above .917 in four of these five. At the most crucial point of the Isles' season, the elite netminder is bringing his A-game.

Cutter Gauthier didn't have the best start to the season but after Sunday's goal and assist he's up to 12 points in his last 12 outings. The 21-year-old winger is someone to keep on your radar down the stretch as he's currently rostered in just 8% of Yahoo Leagues.

Gauthier's linemate Mason McTavish has also been hot lately. With two assists on Sunday, McTavish has a team-leading 13 points in his last 12 games. The 22-year-old forward is quickly coming into his own now that he's healthy. This Ducks team is going to be scary in a few years…

It's been a largely successful season for 24-year-old Lukas Dostal, but he's been prone to few stinkers behind an inexperienced Ducks team. Sunday was one such outing as he allowed five goals on 14 shots before getting pulled. Ville Husso replaced him and allowed two goals on 11 shots.

A seven-goal explosion for St. Louis allowed every single Blues forward to record a point on Sunday.

Jordan Kyrou led the way with three assists, impressively following up his three-goal performance from Saturday.

Jake Neighbours had a goal and assist to extend his point streak to four games. He has 11 points in his last 10 outings and is rostered in just 16% of Yahoo formats. His and a few other hot streaks will be discussed in Puneet Sharma's Top 10 column Monday morning. Make sure to check it out!

Dylan Holloway also had a goal and an assist against Anaheim. The 23-year-old forward has a team-leading 32 points in his last 33 games. What an offer sheet that was.

With two assists on Sunday, Justin Faulk has five points in his last five games. Not to be outdone, Cam Fowler has six in his last five after posting a helper on Sunday. Both blueliners are rostered in less than 20% of Yahoo leagues. St. Louis runs two balanced power-play units, and although Fowler was getting more deployment in recent months, Faulk has seen more opportunity over the last two games.

The Blues are a team to target for the upcoming fantasy week because they play four games and face relatively weak opponents who have been giving up a lot of goals.

Logan Cooley snapped a six-game point drought with his game-winning goal against Vancouver. He'd been having an incredible season prior to this recent dry spell; let's hope Sunday's goal gets him back on track.

After tallying two assists, Nick Schmaltz is up to 12 points in 11 games since the Four-Nations break.

With a power-play goal on Sunday, Quinn Hughes has a point in all three games he's played since returning from injury. 63 points in 53 games – a 97-point pace. Another incredible season from the Canucks' captain.

Elias Pettersson stayed hot with an assist on Vancouver's only goal of the contest. He's up to seven points in his last six games.

If you didn't see the final game of the night, you're probably wondering why Connor Hellebuyck saw any action in a low-scoring game that was supposed to be his night off. Well, Eric Comrie was pulled by a concussion spotter a few minutes into the game. Hellebuyck came in for 10 minutes and allowed one goal on six shots before Comrie came back and finished the contest. Overall, Comrie stopped 14 of the 15 shots he faced to secure the win. He's limited opponents to two goals or fewer in seven of his last eight starts, establishing himself as a reliable streaming option in fantasy leagues thanks to the strong Jets' team in front of him.

20-year-old Jani Nyman scored his second NHL goal in his third NHL game Sunday. Both of his goals have come with the man advantage. He had 26 goals in 55 AHL games this season and it's encouraging to see that translating to the big leagues so far.

With an assist against Winnipeg, Chandler Stephenson extended his point streak to five games, while Jordan Eberle extended his to four. Eberle has an impressive seven points during this stretch. He needed a few games to shake off the rust following a three-month absence due to a rare pelvic injury, but he seems to be firing on all cylinders now.

23-year-old Cole Perfetti had a mushy middle of the campaign but he's heating up again. A goal and assist against Seattle give him 17 points in his last 19 outings.

Like Perfetti, Brandon Montour also experienced a mushy middle of the campaign followed by recent heat. Sunday's assist gives Montour 10 points in his last eight appearances.

If you need a defenseman in a deeper league, take a flyer on Dylan Samberg. He was all over the scoresheet Sunday, scoring the game-winning goal while adding an assist, five shots, two blocks and a hit. He's been a steady source of shots, blocks, and hits over the past few weeks, with a sprinkle of offense now and then. With Neal Pionk out week-to-week, Samberg could have some sneaky offensive upside for the next little while. He's rostered in just 3% of Yahoo Leagues as I write this!
