Good morning, good afternoon, good evening everyone. Welcome to the Injury Ward. My name is Logan Clarkson and every Wednesday I will be chauffeuring you through injury news and updates from around the NHL. As always, I’d like to thank every single one of you for reading. Now, on to the bad (and some good) news.
Semyon Varlamov / NYI – General manager Mathieu Darche relayed that Varlamov’s rehab from knee surgery in December is going well. All eyes on this team's goaltending situation with the recent trade of Noah Dobson, prompting questions of whether Ilya Sorokin is available in a trade. Varlamov has two years left of a four year 2.75 million dollar per year contract. Bringing in David Rittich on top of them doesn’t exactly show a ton of confidence in Varlamov’s health.
Alex Pietrangelo / VGK – Pietrangelo (hip) will be stepping away from the game of hockey indefinitely to recover from serious hip injuries, the team announced Monday. Pietrangelo was a mainstay on St. Louis, and then Las Vegas blue lines' and will be sorely missed. He had a career high of 54 points in one season with each team.
Tij Iginla / UTA – Iginla (hip) is said to be making significant progress lately and will be on the ice for rehab within the month. This is great news for him and Utah alike as they look to move away from the title of team with four third lines.
Jonas Brodin / MIN – Brodin underwent surgery “a few weeks ago” and is unlikely to be ready for the start of the 2025-26 season. Brodin doesn't have a ton of fantasy value but that isn't surprising considering his D zone starts percentage which usually lies in between 55-59 percent.
Ryan Nugent-Hopkins / EDM – Nuge (hand) was said here on this very blog to have a possible broken hand during the playoffs, and unfortunately it was true. He did however suffer his injury in the finals and not in the Conference finals. You gotta be wrong sometimes. Nuge should be ready for training camp.
Roman Josi / NSH – Josi (concussion) expects to play in the 2025-26 season after being diagnosed with postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome, and having his future be up in the air for the past few months. Wishing him a speedy recovery from the head injury.
Martin Fehervary / WSH – Fehervary (knee) is expected to be ready for training camp.
Tyson Foerster / PHI – Foerster (elbow) sustained an injury and a subsequent infection in his elbow while representing Team Canada at the IIHF World Championship, and his status for training camp is unknown as of now.
Jonathan Kovacevic / NJD – Kovacevic (knee) won’t be available for Opening Night of the upcoming season.
