Braydon Coburn to the Lightning for Radko Gudas, Picks

by Dobber on March 2, 2015

Fantasy Impact: The Tampa Bay Lightning have acquired defenseman Braydon Coburn from the Philadelphia Flyers for defenseman Radko Gudas and 2015 first- and third-round draft picks.

The Lightning get: A steady defensive defenseman. And despite the anger aimed at him by Flyers fans, he was actually their best defensive defenseman. He saw all the defensive zone shifts, faced the toughest competition (behind only Nick Schultz) and he boasted a Relative SAT of +1.30.

The Flyers get: a tough, physical blue-liner who can also move the puck. They replaced Coburn with somebody similar, but with less experience and more toughness. Gudas has been used on the power play  at times, making him a multi-category stud in fantasy hockey. He should be able to pick up where he left off with his new team, there is no reason to think otherwise. Gudas, however, is sidelined until the playoffs (so…next season) with a knee injury.

Fantasy Players Impacted: Gudas is out for the regular season so really this frees up a lot of ice time for the likes of Michael Del Zotto. You may see Luke Schenn take on more defensive responsibility now. He had been pretty sheltered this season with his minutes, until now.

Coburn’s arrival gives them more stability defensively. Right now,  Anton Stralman and Matt Carle are seeing the toughest minutes. Coburn should shoulder some of that load and this will free up one of Stralman or Carle for more even-strength puck movement. Here is the player usage chart for the TB defensemen:

So you should see one of Stralman or Carle step it up offensively. My hunch is Stralman.

Fantasy Players this helps, in order:

1. Stralman

2. Carle

3. Del Zotto

Fantasy Players this hurts, in order:

1. Mark Barberio
