The Top 100 defensemen to own in points-only keeper leagues. September edition. Karlsson still reigns …

 

This month, as with every year, is the month with the fewest changes. Very few free agents signed or trades made since the August ranking. The few players who did join a new team have been adjusted, and there were several small tweaks based on feedback (i.e. I read your comments and take a second look at the player you mention). But otherwise, not a lot has changed. (Check out Top 300 skaters here)

As always, the rankings consider points this year, their 3YP (likelihood points when they peak), their upside, proneness to injury, how their depth chart looks now and in the future (who is ahead of them/who they play with/coaching style). These are for points-only.

    Not a single Canuck in the top 100?
    Seems like Edler should be cracking that elite company … of players likely to get in the range of 15 points … but you’re entitled to your opinion

    Mike Reilly, who isn’t even guaranteed to make the team this season is listed over Jared Spurgeon — who isn’t even on the list — who’s almost certain to be top pair and top PP unit? What the hell?

      I’ve been thinking about just sticking with a Top 60, because players 61 through 130 are pretty much equal and heavily dependent on fantasy team needs.
      For a defenseman to really set himself apart and get into that Top 60, he pretty much needs to have 50-point potential and a high likelihood of 40+ points in the season ahead. I don’t think Spurgeon checks either box. But like I said, players 61-130 are so similar in points-only keeper value that I’m tempted to just post Top 60. I know I’ve been saying that for months…

      Yeah, that was stupid of me. I’m cutting this to a Top 50 next month. I can’t seem to get a formula that works properly after the Top 50

    Notable omissions, Spurgon and Martinez stand out to me. How come Matheson is ranked higher than Provorov on this list but on your prospect rankings it’s the opposite? Also wondering your thoughts on Adam Larsson having such a high ranking for a guy that hasn’t ever put up big points. In between McDonagh and Stralman is quite the compliment. Awesome stuff love the site!

      No, I don’t have use for 30-point upside, 25-point likelihood. He had eight of his points early in the season and then did nothing over the last 65 games.
