The Top 300 skaters to own in fantasy hockey keeper leagues – August edition. Guess where Connor McFirstPlace ranks?

 

This month, all of my projections for the 11th annual Fantasy Guide were uploaded into these rankings. So this is my annual 'audit' of the rankings, in that sense. In keeper leagues, you have to balance the long-term value of players with immediate playoff. This is why a player like Mitch Marner moves up so many spots. I had initially felt that he would not make the team. However, if he does the make the team as I now project, then the immediate payoff for fantasy teams is great. If he gets cut from training camp, then he'll tumble all the way back to 200th spot in October.

So now there is a new king. Connor McDavid ascends to the top of this list for the very first time. And it works out very nicely (not planned, I swear) that the two cover boys of this year's Fantasy Guide are one-two on this list. As always, the rankings consider points this year, their 3YP (likelihood points when they peak), their upside, proneness to injury, how their depth chart looks now and in the future (who is ahead of them/who they play with/coaching style). These are for points-only, and of course – positions are not factored (i.e. a defenseman's offensive upside isn't as high as a forward's).

        yeah (goal = 1pts, pass = 1pts for forwards) but still !
        Obvioulsy a ranking like that is always subject to discussions and im ok with that :-)
        But just another one for the road, Atkinson before Jenner and Saad ?

          I have Atkinson, no way I’d trade him for Jenner the plugger (Foligno Part 2?), or Saad who I don’t believe has Atkinson’s upside.

          Steen – So he’s out to start much of this year, and so he’s pretty useless in points-only leagues (42 points? Wouldn’t even make my pro team). So now you own him for future years – and next year he’s 33. How much will he get at 33 in what is now more of a depth role with the Blues? Pass.

            come on… you can’t compare Jenner with Foligno.
            Atkinson is a good little player but you already see the best of him… Jenner as way more potential than Atkinson, maybe not upsides but potential.

            Steen 52 pts, not 42, in 67 games. he will be ready for the start of the season and should be the linemate of tarasenko for few years

            You’re right – what Foligno did shocked the hell out of me. Jenner could never do that.
            Then again, I only live near Oshawa and watched Jenner grow up with Generals so what do I know? ;)

            If Steen is ready to start the season, then yes he would have some value. But he won’t be. Otherwise you would have said something after you read it in my Fantasy Guide, right?

            I bet my annual subscription to your guides that Jenner will hit the 35 goals – 60 pts this year if healthy and Cam will be near of this… only if he can stay on the 1st line with Jenner :-)
            Steen is a warrior… fuck the world cup but he will be there for the 1st game

            Well, I don’t agree. So you’ll have to like my Rankings except for the Steen, Jenner and Atkinson parts.

            Jenner is a third-liner and he gets hurt too much to ever see that bet through (your words “if healthy” will probably void the bet). But he won’t do that if he’s healthy. Cam drags up Jenner’s offense, not the other way around. Why won’t people in my leagues think as you do? I could never get Atkinson by offering up Jenner…I wish

            If you think we’ve seen the best of Atkinson, then you’ll be in for a surprise shortly. Do yourself a favor and have a little faith. Steady SOG and S% increase, consistent pts/gp increase, about to hit his prime. He’s right on target, watch

    52 seems awfully high for Teravainen, he hasn’t really done much with the chances he has had. He’s certainly a player I would target in keeper leagues but not over some of the names below him.

    What’s with the 11 rank jump from Wheeler? Did the rankings not change a lot in July after the Draft? Not sure of this affected other guys a lot too, he’s just the first one I noticed to be surprisingly high with a big positive change in rank

        Maybe I’m just not reading it right when I read it but I still don’t get why Wheeler had such a big bump. Laine was already in the July rankings so it’s not like your projections didn’t involve him and it doesn’t seem like you really updated it unless you shifted all the A’s for Laine’s goals from someone else. Meanwhile I don’t know what happened that could have pushed Giroux, Malkin and Stamkos down recently while also moving Wheeler so far up that couldn’t have been considered in July

          Well, I said in the intro that I imported my projections for this season. That this is my yearly ‘audit’. So these are the projections most accurate for the year. Then each of the next 11 months, my ‘tweaks’ start getting used again. And by the 11th month, all that tweaking made a few of the players a little inaccurate. And then – bam, I have my August ‘audit’ and the players reset properly.

          So in July, when I ‘ballparked’ the 16-17 projection for Wheeler, I was obviously 7 or 8 points lower than what the projection actually ended up at.
          And in July my ‘ballpark’ had overshot Malkin, Giroux and Stamkos when in fact thorough analysis and the use of my formula gave me a 16-17 number that was somewhat lower.

    I am posting this as someone who believes McDavid should’ve won the Calder over Panarin. I do not think that after 45 games, McDavid deserves to be crowned best fantasy player in hockey. Just my opinion, but it seems like he is being given the shiny new toy treatment.

      Solid point, but answer me this – if you owned McDavid, would you trade him for Crosby? POINTS ONLY.
      I wouldn’t (and as a Crosby owner, I would trade him for McDavid). So I guess that pretty much puts him on top (I wouldn’t trade Crosby for Kane in a million years, just to cut off any rebuttal involving Kane…)

        That question would depend on whether I was rebuilding or contending. If I was rebuilding then Crosby’s age comes into play, hence I would go with McDavid. If I was contending, I would stick with Crosby, Kane or Ovechkin over McDavid. I am not saying McDavid won’t get there…I am a big fan…just not after 45 games.

          So there’s your answer.
          1. I wouldn’t trade McDavid for Crosby. But I would trade Crosby for McDavid.
          2. The guy in my league who owns McDavid said “no” when I offered him Crosby.
          3. The guy in my other league who owns McDavid said “no” when I offered him Malkin and Kucherov.
          4. You would trade McDavid for Crosby – some of the time.

          Conclusion – most people would trade McDavid in most situations, but not in all. Therefore, McDavid should be ranked first…but only by a slim margin. Like 179.8 to 170.6 ;)

          If the league counts other categories (which is not about these rankings, this is points-only), then Ovechkin should be king.
          Kane I’m still not sold on last year. At all. I wouldn’t even trade my Tavares for him (even though the formula has Kane ranked above Tavares).

    I know Klefbom have had his fair share of injuries, but shouldn’t the #1 D on the Oilers, the guy who will most likely play with McDavid, Lucic, and Eberle on the PP, be on this list? Over guys such as Justin Schulz?

          A LH shot D I don’t believe will part of what they picture for their power play. At least their top one. That’s why they paid out the butt for Larsson. Klef will be a middle-of-the road two-way D who misses 10-15 games per year with injuries.

    Huberdeau over Barkov? Is it because it is harder to get a good scoring LW than a C? Also, you think that Johasen will outscore Scheifele? I can see it happening this year,but if we consider long-term upside (as I think we should for keeper leagues) I was thinking that Scheifele will maybe be better surounded than Johansen (Wheeler, Laine, Ehlers vs Forsberg, Neal, Wilson or Jarnkrok). What do you think?

      Hi Anthony, positions don’t factor into this. Huberdeau is above Barkov because Barkov gets injured a lot. At this point I rate him a high likelihood of missing over a dozen games this year.
      Scheifele over Johansen – that’s a tough one, I would still prefer Johansen at this point

        That’s a good point, I knew Barkov missed nearly 20 games this year, but I forgot he also got injured (especially in his first season).
        Also, if postions do not factor, you rank Huberdeau over Scheifele? Is it because of injuries as well? He missed just 11 games this year and none the previous season.

    Josi has to be higher; him and Eberle need to swap he is too valuable only 4 defenders posted sixty plus points last season and he is one that should vault him higher than 63.

      Nope! I had kind of mixed feelings when I saw that. I drafted him as an 18 year old!
      He’s 315. Out of curiosity, how many points do you see him getting this year? (and it’s only going to get worse from there)

        I know his production has dropped, but he is still a great…ish player.
        Lining up with Toews of course helps, I think his production is really going to depend on his health and who the else is on the 2nd line. If he can play 75-82 games and gets good chemistry I think he will be a great bounce back player. I would like to see him line up with Motte, or Vesey if they can sign him. Time will tell.

          He’s 37 and will never get 50 points again. He’s a dropsy in all three of my keeper leagues (one league he may be worthy as a waiver pickup at a few points during the season, but not draftable) and playing with a promising rookie would make the outlook worse, not better. I like Vesey and Motte, but Hossa should be helping them not the other way around.

            What are your other options? There has to be a better player you can roll the dice on, unless this is the 26th round and your league has more than 12 teams

            Well there were other options (draft is 2 weeks past) but its a 12 team keeper league carry over 24 players (12 fwd, 5 D, 2 G) plus there is a separate prospect roster. League is 15+ years going, So there is a lot of players gone already. The draft is usually 1st and 2nd round prospects and fillers. I have a pretty solid team, and decent prospect roster already. I rolled the dice on him thinking he would be a decent filler on wing, cap hit is high ( we are a cap league) but I figure I can always drop. I drafted him higher than I should have, but the real deal was getting Mathews (I had the 1st overall). So in short, I would have got a late NHL 1st rounder or 2nd round draft player.

    How in the world do you have Backstrom over Tarasenko on a keeper league?? Are you high or just out of your mind. A 29 year old that showed injury problems last year vs. the next Ovechkin who is 24

      Javin, you speak of 29 as if he’s ready for the old-age home instead of at the heart of his prime, and you speak of the 7 games he missed last year as this serious problem that he has – when he hasn’t missed a game in any of the three prior years. The guy had an Iron Man streak going. And truth be told, Tarasenko is lower in small part because of is mild injury risk (missed 2, 5, and 18 games over last three years versus Backstrom missing 7, 0, and 0)

      Tarasenko’s best season is 74 points, Backstrom (who is only 28) beat that four times (and counting).

        ^ is to point out some more idiotic offenses you made in this list. In terms of the subject at hand, Tarasenko has 1 less point in the last 2 years than Backstrom and he’s 4 years younger. You need to get off the drugs man. Backstrom has played with Ovi his whole career (I love Backstrom btw, he is just way too high on this list) versus Tarasenko has played with nobody near his talent level, albeit guys like Fabbri look pretty good. Don’t even get me started on the fact you have a 31 year old Ryan Getzlaf in the top 20.

    In my current keeper league, you have to start 6 f, 3 d, 1 goalie. I can keep 8 guys. Right now I am keeping 7 forwards and 1 goalie. But I have a chance to pickup doughty but would have to drop either Nugent-Hopkins, Turris, or Tyler Johnson…. What should I do!?

    One more quick question. Just joined a new keeper league. I was able to draft pacioretty. I have a potential opportunity to trade him for Scheifele 1 for 1. Should I do this? And if I can do this, if possible should I trade Scheifele 1 for 1 for Ryan Johansen? Im torn… Thanks!

      I would trade Pacioretty for Scheifele and I would be tempted to flip him for RyJo – but I’ll leave the latter decision up to you
