IR Report: Elias, Ellis, Eberle and Eaves

The latest injury updates on Zach Bogosian, Pascal Dupuis, Jordan Eberle, Paul Stastny and more…

The weeks pass, the injuries mount. Sid’s finally on the score sheet and Keith’s on the shelf. Who’s still chugging along? Not most of these guys:

ANAHEIM Simon Despres – Jeremy Rutherford’s latest regret was gifted an upper-body injury (or UBI) by Colorado’s Tyson Barrie (who, incidentally, will miss three games for it). I bet he’d have liked a receipt with that. He’s out indefinitely, and the Ducks have placed him on the IR.

BOSTON Dennis Seidenberg – Seidenberg is now up to eight weeks out from back surgery, recovering.

BOSTON Brad Marchand – Marchand is back in the lineup, if you didn’t already know. His concussion woes from last week are behind him for the time being.

BUFFALO Zach Bogosian – The Sabres’ defenseman is still on the shelf with an “abdominal ailment”. He missed Monday’s practice, so he will likely miss Wednesday’s game at the least.

CALGARY Lance Bouma – Bouma suffered a broken left fibula last week and the prescription was three months of downtime. No news past that, so you can safely assume that it’s still the case.

CAROLINA James Wisniewski – Wiz is out for six months after tearing his ACL less than a minute into his home opener. This will be the last mention of him here unless he gets better, because I doubt you wanna hear “he’s still out with that SEASON ENDING INJURY I told you about four months ago” in February.

CHICAGO Duncan Keith – The former Norris Trophy-winning defenseman and reigning Conn Smythe champion is out 4-6 weeks with a torn meniscus.

COLUMBUS Alexander Wennberg – The Jackets’ forward returned to the lineup Tuesday night, but couldn’t help ease his team’s free fall. He played 17 minutes, but Columbus was shut out.

DALLAS Curtis McKenzie – McKenzie was subject to a brutal hit from behind by Tampa Bay’s Nikita Nesterov. He’s out indefinitely, and there’s no real prognosis on why. The Stars are just saying “lower-body” injury (or LBI for short). Nesterov’s dealing with a two-game suspension for his efforts.

DALLAS Patrick Eaves – Eaves was placed on the IR by Dallas on Wednesday. He’s got an LBI.

DETROIT Pavel Datsyuk – Datsyuk’s ankle is still keeping him out, so status quo here too until around November.

DETROIT Johan Franzen – Scary news out of Detroit, as Franzen started showing signs of post-concussion symptoms. He was immediately placed on the IR. No word on a return date yet.

DETROIT Danny DeKeyser – DDK returned quite early from a foot injury. He played on Saturday to the tune of 20 minutes, 1 shot, and +1.

EDMONTON Jordan Eberle – Ebs is still 1-3 weeks away from playing, but that return date is getting closer and closer. As an Eberle owner, I’m salivating. Arguably Edmonton’s best current fantasy asset (Hall’s injury history and McDavid’s lack of a track record hurting their respective cases), Eberle might pop back into the old Jordan Nugent-Hallkins line and leave McDavid with Yakupov.

MONTREAL Zach Kassian – Kassian still isn’t out of rehab for substance abuse.

NASHVILLE Ryan Ellis – Luckily for Ellis, he can take him time recovering from a lower-body injury that has kept him on day-to-day status. The Preds have one of the best blue lines in the league.

NEW JERSEY Patrik Elias – Elias owners have to bear with some bad news. Coach John Hynes says that he’s “not close” to returning from his knee issue.

NEW YORK ISLANDERS Jaroslav Halak – Halak made his return to the lineup from an undisclosed injury and led the Isles to two wins, including a shutout. He’s a fantastic own while he’s healthy; the Kris Letang of goalies.

NEW YORK ISLANDERS Thomas Hickey – Hickey also came back from his thumb injury a little early. Originally projected at four weeks, he returned just after two, playing 15 minutes and posting two blocks and a hit.

OTTAWA Andrew Hammond – The Hamburglar has not yet played for the Sens, but he’s finally healthy.

OTTAWA Clarke MacArthur – MacArthur’s out indefinitely after suffering his third head injury in eight months. Jesus. Invest in some bubble-wrap, dude. There’s only so many times you can have your eggs scrambled before it’ll mess up your life.

PITTSBURGH Beau Bennett – So who bet on this happening by game 5? Do bookies even allow you to bet on that many games played by Bennett? The guy’s just glued to the shelf. This time, the Pens aren’t even bothering to disclose what it is, likely because they don’t see the point. It’ll be a new one by the time they’ve finished their sentence. Do I sound bitter? It’s probably because this guy gives me anxiety. He’s on the IR, for what it’s worth.

PITTSBURGH Pascal Dupuis – Duper is still about three weeks out of commission with an LBI, but he practiced for the first time since his injury.

PITTSBURGH Eric Fehr – The Pens are still missing Fehr, who is week-to-week recovering from elbow surgery. He also practiced and skated with the Pens at practice.

SAN JOSE Logan Couture – Number 39 in teal will miss 4-6 weeks with a broken leg. The injury occurred in practice.

ST. LOUIS Kevin ShattenkirkAlex Pietrangelo’s partner-in-crime is still out with a groin injury, but has skated for two straight days. He might return as soon as Saturday, but the Blues are “being cautious”, according to the excellent JP Rutherford.

ST. LOUIS Paul Stastny – He’ll be a Band-Aid Boy at this rate, if he isn’t already. Stastny suffered a broken right foot and is out for five weeks. The door opens wider for Jori Lehtera…

ST. LOUIS Robby Fabbri – The Blues’ young prospect is still out for the foreseeable future with a concussion.

TAMPA BAY Andrey Vasilevskiy – Vasy is due for a checkup today for his blood clot problem. If cleared, he can return to practice. We might see him in a game around early November.

TAMPA BAY Victor Hedman – Hedman missed just one game after suffering a concussion on Thursday versus the Stars. This is beginning to look like a problem for him. This is your weekly reminder that brain, groin, and knee injuries can seriously derail a player’s career by becoming a chronic thing. Every time it happens, it makes it easier to get the next one.

TORONTO Stephane Robidas – Leafs’ GM Lou Lamoriello has “no idea” when Robidas will be back. He’s out with a knee injury.

TORONTO Tyler Bozak – Bozak left Saturday’s game versus the Pens with an LBI, but Babcock expects him back Wednesday.

VANCOUVER Chris Higgins – Higgins fractured his right foot four weeks ago, but skated lightly on Tuesday. You can probably expect to see him in action somewhere in the next 2-3 weeks.

WASHINGTON Nicklas Backstrom – Backstrom is a monster. To anyone who thought he might be slow out of the gate and benched him, SUCKS TO SUCK. The perpetually underrated superstar center erupted onto the scene, coming off hip surgery and posted five points in his first two games back, playing on a line away from the Great 8, Alex Ovechkin.
