NHL Injury Report – the latest on Nugent-Hopkins, Rinne, Brown and more

In this week’s edition of Carried Off the Ice we take a quick look at a few injury updates of couple players in the Stanley Cup Finals as well as a few non-playoff updates.

Playoff Injuries:

Gregory Campbell is a playoff warrior!  The Boston Bruin forward broke his leg while blocking an Evgeni Malkin shot but that didn't keep him down as he finished his penalty kill shift. He had surgery on June 11 and is looking at a six-to-eight week recovery. Campbell is not much of a fantasy option but you have to love the effort to get his team into the Stanley Cup Finals.

Marian Hossa didn't skate with the Chicago Blackhawks Wednesday morning but he is expected to play in Game 4 after missing Game 3 with an upper body injury. NHL.com quoted Hawks coach Joel Quenneville "Hossa is expected to play tonight, he is fine." TSN's Aaron Ward believes Hossa's injury is neck related.

Non-Playoff Injuries:

Dustin Brown is another playoff warrior. Pierre LeBrun tweeted on June 8 that "Brown says he tore his PCL in his knee in Game 6 last round. Played through it." He played Game 7 of the second round and the entire Western Conference Finals for the Los Angeles Kings on a torn PCL. He was held pointless and finished with a minus-3 rating against the Blackhawks, but threw 21 hits in the five game series, including eight in the first game.

Darren Helm will try and get back on the ice in July. The Detroit Free Press is reporting that the Detroit Red Wings "are holding out hope that yet another stretch of slow rehabilitation will have left Helm in good enough condition that he can take to the ice in mid-July as part of the team's annual development camp."

Willie Mitchell is clearly not ready to hang up his skates. He posted a video on his twitter account of him skating and taking some shots. Here is his tweet "Just for some doubters and for those who have been supportive." Kings GM Dean Lombardi stated that Mitchell is making progress again and that his knee injury may not be career ending as per LA Kings Insider.

Ryan Nugent-Hopkins seems to be on track with his shoulder rehab. Dan Tencer tweeted "RNH on shoulder rehab: We're not to push it too much, but things are going really well so far." He had surgery to fix an issue that has been bothering him since his days in the WHL, so hopefully this won't bother him anymore. Nugent-Hopkins may not be ready to start the 2013-14 season for the Edmonton Oilers.

Robyn Regehr played through an arm injury in the playoffs and had surgery on June 10 according to Jon Rosen's tweet.

Pekka Rinne says his rehab from hip surgery is going really well. The Tennessean quoted Rinne "It's hard to set any timetables. It's just the nature of the injury and hopefully I can get back and keep progressing steadily, have no setbacks and eventually get back on the ice." Rinne will be re-evaluated in July.
