Dobber’s Offseason Fantasy Grades: Winnipeg

Dobber's offseason fantasy hockey grades – Winnipeg. Plus a full offseason fantasy ranking of all 30 NHL teams, now that they're all posted…

For the last 12 years over at The Hockey News, I have reviewed each team from a fantasy-hockey standpoint and graded them. Now that I am no longer with THN, my 13th annual review will appear here on DobberHockey. This is not a review of the likely performance on the ice or in the standings, but in the realm of fantasy hockey.

Enjoy!

Impact of changes – Inside that jumble of moves above is a net result of two forward roster spots that have opened up. One will go to Alexander Burmistrov. The other, barring a colossal disaster in training camp, will go to potential star Nikolaj Ehlers. Overall, this is an upgrade. Specifically when it comes to offense. Add in the fact that Mathieu Perreault is just entering his prime, while Mark Scheifele and Jacob Trouba are getting closer to that "prime" – and this is definitely a team on the rise. Especially when it comes to fantasy hockey. Could they be the next Tampa Bay? I wouldn't bet on it…but nor would I bet against it.

Ready for full-time – Ehlers has the potential to make the same rookie splash that Johnny Gaudreau, Mark Stone or Filip Forsberg did a year ago. But with Connor McDavid and Jack Eichel around, will anyone notice? Ehlers' talent is among the elite – usually you only get one or two players like this in a rookie class. One difference between Ehlers and Gaudreau/Forsberg – Winnipeg is deeper and Ehlers will have to battle his way up the lineup. Similar to what Stone did last year. But it could absolutely happen.

Read more on Ehlers here.

Joel Armia Is probably going to be the first guy called up and should stick by midseason. The 2011 16th overall pick came over from Buffalo in the big Evander Kane trade. It took him a couple of years but he's finally got the hang of things at the AHL level is developing into a potential third- or second-line power forward.

Ben Chiarot is a potential 100-PIM player, but he tends to get injured a lot. The 24-year-old was finally called up to stay midseason last year, but sure enough he broke his hand that caused him to miss most of the last six weeks of the season.

Get and in-depth stats breakdown on Chiarot here.

Connor Hellebuyck is Winnipeg's best goaltender. Some would say that's not a big statement because Ondrej Pavelec is hated in many fantasy circles, while backup Michael Hutchison has been such a late bloomer that his strong play is met with a lot of skepticism. Regardless of how you feel, Hellebuyck is a quality goaltender who will find his way to the NHL within two years regardless of any logjam ahead of him.

Fantasy Outlook – The Jets were 15th in NHL scoring last season and they did it with a ton of depth up front and on the blue line. Much of that depth consists of young players who are only getting better. It's hard not to like this team after the strides they made last season and I can see them become a Top 10 offensive team in the season ahead. There are also some decent prospects in the system, though it quickly becomes average once Nikolaj Ehlers graduates this year – and then below average after Josh Morrissey and Nic Petan graduate next year. So some replenishment is needed in terms of blue-chippers.

Fantasy Grade: B+ (last year was C+)
