Ramblings: Deadline Downer, Notes on Minor Trades, Mercer Extends Goal Streak, and more (Mar 4)

If you took the day off work to watch the hours of coverage from one of the sports networks that covers the NHL, hopefully you enjoyed the singing, acting, trivia, endless panel discussions, and other filler during that time. Although there were a couple of fantasy-relevant trades and many other minor deals, this trade deadline day might be remembered more for who didn't get traded.

James van Riemsdyk? Couldn't get it done in time, resulting in a major missed opportunity for the Flyers and maybe an acquiring team.

Nick Schmaltz? The Coyotes also could have improved their Connor Bedard odds while punking the league even more by holding more injured reserve and dead cap space than actual players.

J.T. Miller, Brock Boeser, and/or Conor Garland? Nah, the Canucks don't need more draft picks. They're loading up for a run at 20th place next season. Sigh. I don't think there's a fanbase in the NHL that's more furious at its management and ownership right now. The two Pennsylvania teams are giving them a run for their money.

Granted, the major names were all dealt within a week before the deadline. If something's that important, why procrastinate until the very last minute to complete it? I guess fans enjoy the buildup and the drama, but there really wasn't a whole lot on Friday.

Full disclosure: I had to step out for about three hours on Friday to a place that had poor data/wifi, which meant that I couldn't follow what was going on. When I finally got home, I was surprised that my inbox didn't have a stack of emails from the other writers about which players we were all going to write about. Nothing. It felt strange. Anticlimactic. Like a show you've binge watched every episode of wrapping up with a downer of a finale.

Anyway, you can comb through all the trades in our Trade Deadline Tracker. There may be one or two deals that are of particular interest to you involving the team you follow. I'll discuss a few random deals below that didn't quite make a Fantasy Take, but might have implications or are kind of interesting anyway.

You know that Canuck fans wanted more trades than Curtis Lazar getting sent to New Jersey for a fourth-round pick. But hey, it's a draft pick for a team that doesn't seem to care about them that much! My buddy who was keeping me updated via text on the Canucks situation told me that Nils Hoglander has just two more games before he has to be waived to go to the AHL. I wonder if Hoglander is recalled to the NHL soon – this time for good. A trade of one of the Canucks listed above during the offseason might further cement that. But it's fair to say that he was brought up to the NHL too early, and his skills stand out at the AHL level from what I've seen.

Jordan Greenway, just traded to Buffalo, is now 26 years old and has just seven points in 45 games this season. Does that mean that's it for him? Not necessarily. Greenway is an extra-large forward (6-6, 231 lbs.) who has played in just over 300 NHL games. That means he hasn't reached that 400-game threshold for large forwards, which means that there's still time. But if it doesn't happen in the next season or two, it never will. In addition, Alex Tuch (another power forward) is week-to-week with a lower-body injury, which could open up a spot on the Tage Thompson line for Greenway. Or if Jack Quinn continues to fill that spot, Greenway could fill a middle-six role. Something to keep an eye on.

If you're waiting on Ty Smith, then the Dmitry Kulikov trade isn't going to help matters. The Pens now have Brian Dumoulin, Marcus Pettersson, Pierre-Olivier Joseph, and now Kulikov all on the left side. Smith has 15 points in 30 AHL games, which isn't bad but isn't exactly lighting it up either. Both Dumoulin and Kulikov are UFAs in the offseason, which could clear things up a bit.

Nick Ritchie and Brett Ritchie became the first pair of brothers to be traded for each other in NHL history. Nick to Calgary, and Brett to Arizona.

Our two Fantasy Take articles from Friday:

Vrana to St. Louis

Klingberg to Minnesota

Oliver Bjorkstrand made his return to Columbus on Friday, recording an assist in the Kraken's 4-2 win. Unfortunately, he left the game with a lower-body injury, with his status for Sunday still up in the air.

Jared McCann has reached the 30-goal mark for the first time in his career. He has goals in three consecutive games and eight points over his last five games. Also, no player with at least 30 goals has as few assists as McCann (18 A).

I saw a few Oilers fans on Twitter say that they would have liked to have seen Kailer Yamamoto traded at the deadline. They might be glad he wasn't traded (at least for now), as he scored twice (within 40 seconds) and added an assist with five shots in their 6-3 win over Winnipeg. Yamamoto was on a pretty solid line with Leon Draisaitl and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, which was the exact line he was on for most of the 2019-20 season when he close to a point-per-game player (26 PTS in 27 GP).

Maybe that line needs to become a thing again, since that's where Yamamoto is his most productive. Nuge finished with two goals and two assists with a plus-3 and five shots, while Draisaitl had two goals and an assist and a plus-3.

Shayne Gostisbehere made his Hurricanes debut on Friday, and it happened to be against his former team in Arizona. Ghost scored a power-play goal while taking three shots in just under 17 minutes of icetime. He was used on the third pair with Jalen Chatfield while also being used on the second-unit power play. For more on his move to Carolina, check out the Fantasy Take from Alex.

Brent Burns recorded the first four-assist game of his career, with two of those assists on the power play. He is on the Frozen Tools hot list with 12 points over his last eight games. Going back a little further than that, Burns has 20 points over his last 16 games.

With a goal and two assists on Friday, Martin Necas now has nine points in his last seven games. He also has goals in back-to-back games and four goals in his last six games. All three of Necas's points on Friday were on the power play.

Dawson Mercer scored again on Friday, giving him at least one goal in eight consecutive games. That's the longest goal streak of the season and ties the Devils franchise record. Over those eight games, Mercer has 10 goals and 15 points. This recent hot run has allowed the 21-year-old Mercer to reach the 20-goal and 40-point mark in just his second NHL season. The goal scoring will cool off, but he's looking like a legitimate top-6 forward and perhaps more.

Jonathan Marchessault scored a pair of goals while adding an assist in Vegas's 4-3 shootout win over New Jersey. He's formed an interesting new line with Ivan Barbashev, who assisted on both goals, and Jack Eichel, who scored a goal and added an assist. Barbashev has three assists over his last two games, and he would be in a very good spot if these are to be his regular linemates in Vegas.

Fantasy Take: Golden Knights Acquire Barbashev

Adin Hill is on an impressive little run. With a 46-save performance on Friday, Hill now has three consecutive quality starts in starting all of Vegas's last three games. He also has wins in five of his last six games and has also started six of the Golden Knights' last seven games while Logan Thompson is out. Jonathan Quick suited up as the backup on Friday, but he may have to wait a bit to get into any game action the way Hill is playing.

William Carrier left Friday's game with a possible leg injury.

Mike Matheson recorded another assist on Friday, giving him seven points over his last seven games. He's also taken a minimum of three shots over each of his last five games. The opportunity to log major even-strength and power-play minutes has Matheson on the highest scoring pace of his career (18 PTS in 28 GP) while taking the highest shot total of his career (2.4 SOG/GP). His average of 23:40 per game is also the highest of his career. There isn't much fantasy value coming out of Montreal this season, but Matheson is one Hab worth rostering.

Just some fun stuff to finish off…
