Andrej Sekera is among the notable defencemen looking for a new home on July 1st. 

With the Stanley Cup Final underway, we are closing in on the end of the 2014/15 NHL season. This also means we are getting ready to turn the NHL calendar towards the 2015/16 season. First up will be the NHL Entry Draft late in June. If you are anything like me, you love watching how the draft plays out. The picks, the wheeling and dealing, it's all pure excitement. 

Once the draft is done, and the actual calendar turns to July, and we start what I love to call "the silly season" which, of course, is free agency. July 1^st is the opening day for NHL free agents to sign new contracts. 

Over the next couple weeks, I am going to take a look at some big name unrestricted free agents and where they might end up signing. This is pure speculation on my part but I will try and justify my thoughts as to where they land. I have taken a look at the teams' available cap space and roster situation to try and see the best fits for both the players and the teams.

I will take on a different position each week just to make it a bit easier. First we will look at some key available defencemen.

Mike Green

Washington Capitals

Expiring Cap hit: $ 6.083M

Green has spent his entire ten year career with the Washington Capitals. The former 30 goal scorer is going to be one of the more sought after free agents this year for his offensive ability and his skill. At 29 years of age, he is in the middle of his prime and should still be an effective offensive force for a few more years. The fact that he's a right-handed shot also helps to increase his value.
