With nothing left to prove in the QMJHL, what’s next for Nikolaj Ehlers?

In this week's edition of the Journey, we take a look at Winnipeg's Nikolaj Ehlers, a Danish born prospect and top player in the QMJHL for the Halifax Mooseheads.

The Winnipeg Jets completed a successful season in 2014-15, making the playoffs for the first time since hockey returned to Manitoba in 2011. On the horizon are a handful of high-level prospects that could make the playoffs in Winnipeg a regular occurrence. Nikolaj Ehlers, a talented winger from Aalborg, Denmark leads the Jets prospect group into the future.

The 19-year-old burst onto the scene in the QMJHL when he was selected 6th overall in the 2013 CHL Import Draft.  Playing for the Mooseheads alongside top-prospect Jonathan Drouin during the 2013-14 season, Ehlers recorded 104 points over 63 games, earning him the 2013-14 CHL Rookie of the Year award.

Ehlers has all the tools to be an elite fantasy asset. He will be a top-six forward capable of stockpiling points at both even strength and on the man advantage. If he reaches his potential he could be a 70-point player who has the capability to even exceed that number.

On a team that already has established multi-category forwards, the winger could fit in nicely.  Winnipeg vets like Wheeler and Ladd create their offense out of hard work and straight-line speed on the forecheck. Adding Ehlers to the mix could provide some flash and scoring to the Jets forward grouping.
