2008-10-01

San Jose CUTS: Tomas Greiss, Jamie McGinn, Tom Cavanagh, Steve Zalewski, Jason Demers and Michael Wilson.

The Sabres have claimed Matt Ellis off waivers.

The Pens traded prospect d-man Michal Sersen to Tampa for a 5th rounder in '09.

NHL.com has a nice new look – I just double checked: all the stats/sheets, etc are still there. Remember last year they removed the shift charts (which greasemonkey gave us access to soon after). This year, nothing removed thank goodness.

Minnesota Cuts: Petr Kalus and Ryan Hamilton

Chicago has CUT Petri Kontiola, Evan Brophey and Pascal Pelletier. In the end, Bolland has just impressed too much to keep Kontiola over him.

Confirmed: Nikita Filatov will make his NHL preseason game debut tomorrow.

Breaking news from the Tennessean: Bill Daly has stated that the IIHF will soon announce that Alex Radulov is in breach of his contract as their investigation into the matter closes. Daly hopes to speak with the KHL by the weekend to confirm Switzerland as the place for arbitration and set a date.

The Oilers have placed Ryan Potulny on waivers. A rebuilding team such as the Leafs would be nuts not to bring him on board and see what he has to offer. An unexpected move and clearly the result of a terrible training camp for Potulny.

Other Oiler CUTS: Devan Dubnyk, Adam Huxly, Slava Trukhno, Tim Sestito, Tyler Spurgeon, Carl Corazzini and Liam Reddox.

The Inquirer is reporting that Claude Giroux will likely not make the team in camp, and that coach Stevens says his camp has been "just okay".

The injury to Raffi Torres opens up a roster spot on the wing, thus increasing the chances of any one winger on the cusp of making the team. I'm looking right at you Mr. Filatov!

David Krejci has been sidelined with a groin injury. He should be fine for the start of the season, but you never know with the groin.

Dennis Wideman benefitted in a big way last season when Chara and Bergeron were both hurt. The Bruins often play the two on the blue line on the PP. Now that they are both healthy, Wideman has been shifted back to the second unit.

Los Angeles acquired Sean O'Donnell from the Ducks for a draft pick.

Ville Leino scored and played four minutes of PP time for Detroit. Had Datsyuk and Zetterberg played, he would not have seen that, but he is making a good case to make the team.

Although Max Pacioretty scored Montreal's only goal last night, he played just 12:11, which is a sure sign of being cut. The Habs won't keep their future star in the lineup if he is only playing 10 minutes a game (which is what he would have played had A. Kostitsyn, Koivu and Higgins been in the lineup).

In the Bolland vs. Kontiola battale for the second line center job in Chicago: Kontiola had one goal, was a minus-1, and played 15:09 in a 7-1 loss Monday. Bolland had no points, was a minus-2 and played 11:51 in a 3-2 loss last night. Bolland had Kane and Toews in his lineup, Kontiola did not. So far, Kontiola has the edge in terms of performance. Bolland has the edge in terms of expectations.

In another battle, this one over in Edmonton, Gilbert Brule played 13:06 vs. Rob Schremp 13:32 (and a minus-1). Edge Brule.

The Kings employed a four-forward PP system last night, with Doughty as the lone d-man. Harrold only saw 34 seconds of PP time as a result.
