Unbelievable – the Ducks cut Bobby Ryan. Apparently, this move was to get them under the cap and he will be brought back up when they clear some space.

Crushing news for this late-bloomer, but Janne Pesonen did not make the Penguins as noted below by Mr. Angus. In the end, as well as he played, Jeff Taffe and Bill Thomas played better. Paul Bissonette also managed to stick.

He has not played a game in seven months, but Rick DiPietro will be back in action on Monday against the Panthers.

Buffalo has cut Nathan Gerbe, Marek Zagrapan and Tim Kennedy. They also cut Dylan Hunter, Mark Mancari, Mathieu Darche, Michael Funk and Chris Butler.

Chicago has claimed Joakim Lindstrom, an underrated and skilled winger. His arrival in Chicago could spell the end of Igor Makarov's run with the team. Or perhaps Kris Versteeg.

Carolina has cut Dwight Helminen and Bryan Rodney.

The Rangers named Chris Drury their team captain.

FINAL Rangers cuts: Brian Fahey, Corey Potter

The Penguins have cut forward Janne Pesonen. He will begin the season in the AHL.

Ryan Jones played 17:07 last night and 2:02 on the power player, whereas Patric Hornqvist saw 16:53 and 1:46. However, Hornqvist played with Arnott and Dumont and they had 16 shots on goal. It is starting to look as if both players will make this team – at least until Radulov comes back (which I am giving 20% now).

From the Tennessean: The NHL finally met with the KHL re: Radulov. Some details need to be worked out before the KHL will agree to arbitration being held in Switzerland.

Pavel Datsyuk (groin) is back skating now. He is reportedly close, so returning for Game 1 looks promising.

The Calgary Sun is speculating that Mikael Backlund will not make the team this year. That means he will return to Sweden for the season.

Marek Zidlicky has a leg injury that will sideline him for 1-4 weeks. The Wild are not saying the extent, just that it does not look good, according to the Star-Trib.

Josh Harding will miss the next week or so with a scratched cornea, but should be fine for opening day as a backup.

DobberHockey touted rookie Ray Sawada has been cut by Dallas. See all the cuts below.

Kris Versteeg, who has outlasted Petri Kontiola in camp, impressed with two points, 12 PIMs and was a plus-1 in 15:35 of action. It is possible that he could be Chicago's answer to Sean Avery. Watch carefully, as he could be a 40-point, 180-PIM guy if he can stick for a full year.

Joe Thornton left last night's contest with a sore groin. It is said to be not serious, but just a precaution.

CUTS

Calgary: Kyle Greentree, Matt Pelech, Brett Sutter
Dallas: Ray Sawada, Perttu Lindgren, Aaron Gagnon.
Los Angeles: Dave Meckler, Viatcheslav Voynov, Martin Jones
Phoenix: Al Montoya
Washington: Sami Lepisto, Semen Varlamov, Tyler Sloan, Grant McNeill
