Dobber Sports

2009-02-12

Angus here. Keep an eye on Alex Burrows, who played the last half of the St. Louis game with the Sedin twins. He will play in that spot tonight as well against Phoenix. Me and Dobber differ a bit in our respective stances on the importance of line combos in fantasy hockey. He disregards them (most of the time), while I am a sucker for them. To each his own!

Nikolai Khabibulin is hurt (the dreaded lower body injury), so the Blackhawks have recalled Antti Niemi from the AHL. He will backup Cristobal Huet tonight, but could see some game action if the Bulin wall is out for any extended period of time.

The Leafs have placed Jeremy Williams on waivers in an effort to get him to the Marlies. He is ranked 81st on my prospects list and has the same potential that Rich Peverley has – and you saw what Peverley can do.

Alex Semin, out with an undisclosed injury, will probably play on Saturday.

What can I say about Mike Green? We have needed a Paul Coffey in this league since…Paul Coffey. Look how young Green is – now tell me he can't become the first defenseman in years to reach 100 points. He has 14 points in his last six games and it has been seven games since a team has stopped him from getting two points.

Daniel Briere is back practicing and hopes to be back Feb. 24.

Angelo Esposito seriously injured his knee and will probably miss the rest of the QMJHL season and playoffs. This will impact his chances of making the Thrashers in the fall and is a major setback to a prospect who had been regaining his fantasy status. He is ranked 54 on my prospects list.

It looks like, for now, the Sabres will go with Nathan Gerbe in the lineup to cover off Vanek. He played 14:09, which surprisingly enough is more than Clarke MacArthur played. Gerbe also saw nearly five minutes on the PP. He is getting the opportunity. Gerbe is ranked 17th on my top fantasy prospects list.

BUF line combos: Connolly, with Hecht and Stafford; Roy, with Gerbe and Pominville; Ellis, with Kaleta and MacArthur – though later Hecht centered Kotalik and MacArthur.

Ott line combos: Kelly with Vermette and Ruutu; Fisher with Shannon and Winchester. Not looking good for Vermette owners at this point.

Carey Price gave up seven goals on 27 shots last night and I seriously doubt that his groin issues are behind him. He is playing so badly right now that I am certain his owner in keeper leagues is very sour on him – so now is the time to steal him away. He may not get out of this tailspin this year, but next season he'll be back to his old self. He is 2-7-0 since returning from injury and has watched his GAA rocket from 2.30 to 2.73 and SP slip from .921 to .906.

With Visnovsky out and now Grebeshkov joining him (more on that below), Tom Gilbert was huge with three assists last night, logging nearly 23 minutes of ice time. Gilbert has 29 points in his last 44 games, which puts him in the mid-50s. That's the kind of d-man you can expect for the next decade.

Grebeshkov was driven feet first into the boards and had to be helped off the ice. He did not put any weight on his right foot – so expect a high-ankle sprain or something along those lines. At a glance, I'm thinking he's out for February at best – season at worst.

If you are within driving distance of Toronto, make sure you are a part of the upcoming DobberHockey event on March 7 and mingle with other fantasy hockey fanatics at the Marlies game. For 25 bucks you get center ice tickets to the game against Hershey, plus a 10% chance of having your ticket upgraded FREE to the luxury suite where you will enjoy wings and sodas with myself and Russ Miller. Buy your tickets early and you are eligible to win a pair of Leaf tickets when the play the Caps later in March. MORE INFO HERE.

We are putting the finishing touches on a DobberHockey widget. Coming very soon (today?) my ramblings box will be available to the public to put on their web pages where it will stream the daily ramblings.
