Marian Hossa has a torn rotator cuff and he will undergo surgery to repair it. He is expected to be 100% in four months. That will take him out until November 24th, which means exactly 22 games missed if he returns on the 25th to play the Sharks.

To answer a comment under yesterday’s ramblings by “Chris” regarding goaltending prospects: I believe Bernier will be the goalie in LA. Not this year, but next. Quick is a great stop-gap and if he continues to excel, the Kings will trade him. If he falters and is just a suitable backup, then he’ll remain in LA as a backup and Ersberg will be moved. But it will be Bernier who is the goalie of the future. Varlamov will be Washington’s goalie now and in the future. Neuvirth will be only if Varlamov gets hurt, which historically has happened so don’t rule it out. Again, if after two years both goalies are great, then Neuvirth will be moved. More on prospects Rask and Curry later today.

The Canes have put pen to paper with Tuomo Ruutu. A three-year deal worth $11.4 million. Now that he is starting to play 75 games a season again, I think he can creep over that 60-point plateau, perhaps even next season.

As I mentioned would happen yesterday, Bonk has indeed signed in the KHL.

The Avs have signed Brandon Yip to a ELC. His upside is in the 60s and he’ll need an AHL season under his belt. He is ranked 282 on my prospects list (forwards) but will move up with this news.

The Jackets have signed Methot for two years.

The Red Wings have signed Evan McGrath and Ryan Oulahen to contracts. We won’t see either of them this year, and because it’s the Red Wings who are so deep I wonder if we’ll see them ever.

The Wild added some depth in Nathan Smith and Ryan Lannon.

Toronto signed AHLers Alex Foster and Darryl Boyce.

Vancouver made an under the radar signing in Kellan Tochkin. The 18-year-old shot through the draft without any teams nabbing him despite 74 points in 72 WHL games. He’s small and rough on his skates, so obviously a long-term project. It wouldn’t surprise me to see him tear up the WHL in the season ahead.

Leaf prospect Brent Aubin signed to play overseas next season.

Rob Davison will sign a two year contract with New Jersey. He gets a two way in yr. 1 and a one way NHL deal in year 2 with the Devils.

Bad news for Jiri Hudler owners. Detroit GM does not expect Hudler to play in the NHL this year, no matter what happens with the July 30 arbitration. Indications are that Holland has moved on. The Wings have a stable of quality players being brought along slowly and it’s no sweat off of Holland’s ass if he has to shorten the wait for one of them by a year to replace Hudler. Hey, maybe the aforementioned McGrath will get a cup of coffee this year as a result!
