NHL Restricted Free Agents – August 23, 2009

The Fantasy Guide, available here, will have its next update tomorrow – including an in-depth look at the KHL and NHL. I offer four categories of players who are at risk to flee to Russia and offer up candidates to keep an eye on for next summer – and why. As well, I’ll have roster updates (Bertuzzi, etc) and new player lowdowns.

I am now getting a lot of emails from readers indicating that they can login to the forum now, so I believe the worst is behind. Next step – ramp up security.

Still waiting for the Leafs to do something about scoring. While they proved last year that scoring by committee can bring in plenty of goals (they finished ninth in goals for), they lost Nik Antropov. I’m interested in seeing if Brian Burke’s philosophy that adding toughness will create room for the players they have will work. If so, this strategy benefits two players more than anyone else: Grabovski and Stajan.

Here are notable restricted free agents who have yet to sign. It’s time to start keeping an eye on them as they could be training camp no-shows, which generally means a slow start and/or injury in October/ November:

Phil Kessel – he’ll sign, but no rush due to his injury. Look for news in October.
Anton Babchuk – the Canes are looking to deal, but I think you’ll see him go to the KHL. He’s already done it once.
Drew Stafford, BUF
Martins Karsums, TB
Matt Lashoff, TB
Rob Schremp, EDM
Torrey Mitchell, SJ
Brandon Dubinsky, NYR – with Prospal on board and less than $3 million of cap room to play with, Dubinsky owners should start sweating soon.
Cal O’Reilly, NSH – still really pushing for a one-way deal, and frankly I don’t blame him.
