My thoughts on the Stamkos situation:

Even if a team blows Tampa Bay out of the water with an offer sheet (I am taking 10-12 million per year for 10-12 years), they will match. They have a rich owner and there is no way in hell they can let Stamkos walk.

I have seen a few people saying that a Brad Richards replacement plus the offer sheet fee (four 1^st round picks) would be ideal – I'd rather have Stamkos. Draft picks, even 1^st round picks, are such a crap shoot. Unless the team offering Stamkos the deal is a bottom dweller (and I couldn't see him signing with one), the picks would likely be in the 15-25 range.

David Jones re-signed with the Avs. One of the more unheralded wingers in the league – should approach 30 goals this season. He's the best offensive winger in Colorado right now. I know that doesn't say a lot, but he will get a ton of opportunities to produce.

Jagr watch goes on another day. It sounds like the Penguins are very close to an agreement with the former star…. Will be interesting to see how this one plays out.

Chicago has given Buffalo a 7^th round pick next year in order to negotiate with Steve Montador. Um, what?

Sticking with the draft pick-for-negotiating rights thing, the Jackets have sent Montreal a pick in order to talk with James Wisniewski. Wisniewski is arguably the second best defenseman available after Christian Ehrhoff.

It sounds like Erik Cole is going to test the open market. He'd be a perfect fit for a team looking to add a depth winger to the top six – Los Angeles and Vancouver immediately spring to mind.

The Lightning have re-signed Roloson to a one year deal worth $3 million. It probably takes them out of the Cory Schneider/Jonathan Bernier discussions for now. They still need to sign a back up, unless they plan to call up either Dustin Tokarski or Cedric Desjardins. Mike Smith is a UFA.

One team I could see (or I think should be) going after Cory Schneider is New Jersey. Zero in the pipeline after Brodeur, and they probably have the prospects/assets to get a deal done. Jacob Josefsen, perhaps?

The Joni Pitkanen signing hurts Jamie McBain's value, but Carolina was probably going to sign a veteran defenseman even if Pitkanen walks. Corvo and Pitkanen both saw more PP time than McBain last year, but the youngster's talent will eventually emerge to the forefront. He's too good to be playing only on the second power play unit.

A solid read on Vancouver draft pick David Honzik – I always like it when prospects trend upwards at the right time of the season.

10 players in NHL history have five or more 50 goal seasons. Pavel Bure is one of them. The other nine are in the hall of fame. I am a huge proponent of weighting peak performance over longevity – get the Russian Rocket in there already.

Buffalo will need to pony up for Ehrhoff – it is believed that he turned down a six-year deal from Long Island just south of $6 million per season. The Sabres have a strong team and an owner more than willing to open up his wallet… I still think Ehrhoff has his eyes on the Winged Wheel…

Montreal signed defenseman Yannick Weber to a two-year deal. Lots of talent – he needs to stick at defense to have any sort of fantasy value. I could see a 30-35 point season with a regular shift on the PP.

Assuming Montreal doesn't dip into the free agent market, their top six is likely to be Markov, Gorges (needs to be re-signed), Subban, Gill, Spacek, and Weber/Emelin.

The NHLPA is filing a grievance against the NHL/Nashville, saying that the team didn't get qualifying offers out in time to several RFAs, including Kostitsyn, Spaling, O'Reilly, and Halischuk. Imagine if Weber was included in this group?

Three teams to watch on July 1 – Buffalo, Carolina, and Los Angeles. I think all three will make a bold move or two.
