The Leafs get: A potential second-line winger who scores lots of goals and could slide onto the third line as early as next season. There was a log-jam on defense, still is, but this helps clear some of that up.
The Lightning get: A big stay-at-home defenseman who fills TB’s shortcoming. They were stronger up front then they were on the back-end, opposite of the Leafs. So this was the right deal for both teams.
Fantasy Players Impacted: The Leafs won’t add three rookie forwards next season. At most, they will add two. So those two are no longer between Matt Frattin, Joe Colborne and Nazem Kadri. Now there are four players fighting it out. Added competition doesn’t hurt. Ashton joins a better depth chart, in terms of his career.
