Alex Semin signed a five-year extension with the Hurricanes worth $7 million per season. He earned that with a fabulous year. That being said, I think we’ll get two fabulous years in the next five… one so-so year, and two bad or injury-prone years. That’s how I’d treat it in keeper leagues.

So Joel Quenneville decides to use his Porsche to speed down the freeway instead of plow his fields and the result is a two-goal night for Michael Frolik (plus an assist). Well color me shocked. Frolik’s fantasy output is going to continue at a good clip until it is decided that he needs to be out harvesting instead of racing. Could be next game, could be never.

On the plus side, all that toiling on a checking line and honing his defensive game has made Frolik a more complete player.

Speaking of holding youngsters back, Tyler Toffoli was in the lineup for the Kings again. He scored. Again. Four games, three points, 47 minutes of ice time. I likes what I sees.

Three games without a point for Jake Muzzin, so the party’s over. Or is it? He led all Kings not named ‘Drew’ in ice time with 22:32.

Mike Richards has been shut out of six of his last seven games. He’s also a minus-12. Next lowest on the Kings is Rob Scuderi with minus-3.

Jon Cooper has been named the coach of the Lightning, which is a relief for those owners of their rookies. He was the coach of Syracuse, so he’s already coached Conacher, Johnson, Palat and Killorn.

*

Matt Halischuk scored a goal in his last game for the Preds. He was plus-1 with four shots. Then he was a healthy scratch. What? The Preds situation, for fantasy hockey, has been a running joke for years. I like the Preds a lot, and admire their winning ways. But putting your finger on what to do with their players is like trying to organize ants.

Since being moved to forward, Brent Burns has eight points in seven games. Not bad for a D-eligible fantasy guy…

New Jersey’s line combinations without Ilya Kovalchuk:

1st line – Patrik EliasTravis ZajacDavid Clarkson

4th line – Kostopoulos – Pesonen – Sestito

And the other two lines were literally mix and match. The most frequent line combo after that was Bernier – Carter – Gionta… and then Bernier – Carter – Henrique when Gionta was hurt. The plan was for Henrique to center Loktionov and D’Agostini, but the injury to Gionta messed things up.

The Penguins continue to load up in advance of the trade deadline. The early bird gets the worm, and all that stuff. Love the attitude. Why wait until last minute? This way you can relax and make a proper trade decision, give them a few more games to get used to the team system, etc. They acquired Douglass Murray from the Sharks for a substantial price – two high draft picks (2nd rounders). That’s actually a higher cost than Morrow and a 5th for Brenden Morrow and a 3rd.

My THN column from yesterday goes over some of the big moves of the last few days here.

*

Big signing, but only when describing the player’s size – the Sens signed Buddy Robinson out of the CCHA. The 6-5, 222-pound forward has little offensive upside, but obviously a bit of potential in terms of hits and PIM. But he’ll need to show it in the AHL for several years first.

Cal Clutterbuck could miss some time for this injury:

Do you think Drew Doughty wanted this goal? Wow, incredible drive:
