Canucks Acquire Derek Roy

Fantasy Impact: The Vancouver Canucks have landed Derek Roy from the Dallas Stars. In exchange, they give up top defenseman prospect Kevin Connauton and a second-round draft pick.
The Stars get: another top offensive defenseman prospect, who goes hand-in-hand with Joe Morrow. With a youthful Alex Goligoski already in place, and the hard-hitting Brenden Dillon, not to mention Jamie Oleksiak – you can see that the Stars have put some nice pieces in place. You can read an updated fantasy profile on Connauton here.
The Canucks get: The perfect second-line center. Since they already have one in Ryan Kesler, what they now have is the best third-line center this side of Jordan Staal. Given Kesler’s propensity to getting injured, having Roy there is about as solid an insurance policy as you can take out.
Fantasy Players Impacted: When Kesler is out of the lineup, which has been most of the time, the next highest forward in terms of PP ice time after the Sedins is Alex Burrows. Derek Roy will eat into that PP time, which hurts Burrows. It will also hurt Zack Kassian, when Kesler returns – Kassian was supposed to be in the minors on a conditioning stint, could be more of a permanent situation. Roy is a centerman, but as you can see there will be some shifting around up front and wingers will be impacted. I would include Jannick Hansen with that as well – but this acquisition could be a good thing for him. It would all depend on when Kesler returns, but that could be within two weeks.
The big winner in this deal? Cody Eakin. His linemates just took a big upgrade, to say nothing of his ice time and PP time. Look for him to line up with Loui Eriksson.

Meanwhile, Connauton moves to a young organization probably more willing to promote him next season. The wait won’t be as long, which for a prospect in fantasy hockey is almost always a good thing.
