Fantasy Impact: Daniel Alfredsson has signed a one-year contract with the Detroit Red Wings.

The Red Wings get:

Confirmation:

Say it ain't so, Alfy. After spending his entire career in Ottawa, Alfredsson jumps ship to the Red Wings. The Wings have a better shot at the Cup than Ottawa, but by how much? Perhaps the Senators wanted to go in a different (see: younger) direction?

From Bruce Garrioch (I know, I know): Alfredsson told the Senators the decision was not based on money. He wants the chance to win a Stanley Cup before his career is over. #Sens.

Alfredsson had 26 points in 47 games last year, and he added another 10 points in 10 postseason games. He may not be a 103 point guy any more, but he can still play in the top six in any NHL city (and he will do exactly that in Detroit).

His linemates from last season, courtesy of Frozen Pool:

Frequency Strength Line Combination
12.29% EV 11 ALFREDSSON,DANIEL – 73 LATENDRESSE,GUILLAUME – 7 TURRIS,KYLE
11.45% EV 11 ALFREDSSON,DANIEL – 9 MICHALEK,MILAN – 7 TURRIS,KYLE

5.63% EV 11 ALFREDSSON,DANIEL – 73 LATENDRESSE,GUILLAUME – 15 SMITH,ZACK

Fantasy Players Impacted:

Valtteri Filppula is done in Detroit. Dan Cleary may be on the way out, but the Wings are still negotiating with him. Alfredsson will likely slide in on line two (or perhaps line one with Zetterberg and Datsyuk). The Wings will target a second line center as they want to keep their dynamic duo together. Justin Abdelkader's short-lived career as a top line forward is probably over.

This move probably signals the end of Damien Brunner in Detroit as well (both are right-shooting right wingers). It is too early to say who this helps and hurts with definitiveness, as Detroit will definitely make another move or two. However, as things stand right now….

As for Ottawa, this means more ice time for the young guys – Zibanejad, Stone, Silfverberg. But the Senators have lots of cap space. Do they bring Jason Spezza’s buddy, David Clarkson, in?

Fantasy Players this helps, in order:

1. Datsyuk

2. Nyquist (more talent to play with, he's a left winger)

3. Alfredsson

4. Zetterberg

5. Mika Zibanejad

6. Jakub Silfverberg

7. Mark Stone

Fantasy Players this hurts, in order:

1. Johan Franzen

2. Cleary (if he re-signs)

3. Justin Abdelkader

4. Kyle Turris

5. Tomas Tatar (short term)

6. Tomas Jurco (short term)

7. Calle Jarnkrok (short term)

8. Jason Spezza
