Fantasy Impact: Devils Acquire Ruutu

Fantasy Impact: The New Jersey Devils have added Tuomo Ruutu from the Carolina Hurricanes for Andrei Loktionov.

The Devils get: A once great second/third-line banger who has really slowed due to injuries but can still bring some grit and veteran presence.

The Hurricanes get: A once intriguing prospect who has developed into a tweener with an uncertain NHL present or future.

Fantasy Players Impacted: Ruutu wasn't getting much opportunity to produce in Carolina this season and it's hard to see how he'll get a better chance in New Jersey. That said, the Devils were looking for a winger to put on a line with Jaromir Jagr and Travis Zajac. Ruutu could be that guy, which could resuscitate his dwindling fantasy value. He appears to be too broken-down to make much of an impact but if he jumps onto the top line he'd move Dainius Zubrus down the roster.

Ruutu's acquisition probably means Jagr won't be re-signed this summer but if he is then that's one more hurdle for Devils forward prospects to climb, not that they have any. Okay, Reid Boucher is a good one but Ruutu wouldn't block his arrival.

The Hurricanes mostly get cap space here as Loktionov isn't a high impact player. This could very well be his last chance at making something of himself. That Ruutu really wasn't much of a top-six player this season means there isn't much of an opening for anyone to step into right away.

One thing for deep rotisserie-leaguers to consider is that Brock McGinn had a good showing at camp last fall and could be an energy player for the team next season filling Ruutu's role and racking up a good number of hits, with some decent scoring.

Ruutu leaving also opens up some space for Justin Faulk to sign a long term extension.

Fantasy Players this helps, in order:

Tuomo Ruutu (probably not much impact though)

Andrei Loktionov (maybe)

Brock McGinn

Fantasy Players thus hurts, in order:

Dainius Zubrus
