Boucher Named Sens Coach

Ian Gooding

Guy Boucher is the new head coach of the Ottawa Senators.

The coaching dominos continue to fall. Less than 24 hours after the Wild named Bruce Boudreau to be their new head coach, Guy Boucher has been hired by the Ottawa Senators to be their next bench boss.

Boucher last coached in the NHL for the Tampa Bay Lightning, posting a 97-78-20 record in 195 games. He also led the Lightning to the Eastern Conference Final in 2010-11. More recently, Boucher coached SC Bern in the Swiss League, posting a 44-29-5 record.

Boucher is known as a highly technical coach, so key to his success in Ottawa will be players buying into his system. The Senators played a very wide-open system under Dave Cameron last season, finishing ninth in the NHL with 2.80 goals/game but at the same time finishing 26th with 2.94 goals against/game.

Interestingly enough, during his three years as the Bolts’ coach, Boucher’s teams consistently finished in the top-10 in scoring while finishing near the bottom of the league in goals allowed. That may have had more to do with how those rosters were constructed than how Boucher coached. But the rumbling was that his players in Tampa eventually tuned out his system, leading to his firing.

Even with the possibility of a more defensive system in Ottawa, the fantasy values of goalies Craig Anderson and Andrew Hammond could improve slightly. Offensive stars such as Erik Karlsson and Mark Stone shouldn’t be hurt by the move either, given Boucher’s track record in Tampa Bay.

Fantasy owners are discussing the Boucher hiring – give your take right here!

Don’t forget the Hoffman connection. Boucher was his coach in the LHJMQ.
