The fantasy impact of Beau Bennett landing in New Jersey …

The New Jersey Devils acquired Beau Bennett from the Pittsburgh Penguins in exchange for the 77th overall selection (Connor Hall) in the 2016 NHL Entry Draft Saturday, June 25.

Deal Breakdown

Bennett has been given opportunity after opportunity to produce alongside Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin, but between ineffectiveness and injury, Bennett has never put it all together for the Penguins.

He has never hit 15 points or played 50 games in the NHL, and enters his age-25 season next fall without a contract. New Jersey now owns his rights as a restricted free agent.

Pittsburgh cut their loses with the former first-round selection because of their salary cap situation, and the Penguins were able to acquire another asset.

Fantasy Skinny

Bennett owns a respectable 1.39 points per 60 minutes and 0.55 goals per 60 minutes at five-on-five since entering the league, and typically shows enough to pass the eye test as a late-round flier.

However, the injuries have limited any shot he's had of putting together an offensive run or gain any traction in the lineup.

The Devils have revived fantasy value for players in recent years. Kyle Palmieri and Lee Stempniak serve as perfect examples. But in Bennett's case, it again requires a healthy season.

This is a wait-and-see situation in most setups, but if he breaks camp in a scoring role, don't be surprised to see modest offensive numbers.

The Prospect

D Connor Hall: A late bloomer, Hall played with Canada's Under-18 team this year and was the biggest riser in the NHL Central Scouting Final Rankings. He's a stay-at-home type with no fantasy appeal at this time.
