2017-03-06

The Top 300 skaters to own in your points-only keeper league – March edition. McDavid back on top

Shouldn’t Valeri Nichushkin be disqualified from that list? It’s a bit insulting for players ranked below…

    • Dobber 2017-03-06 at 12:44

He’s owned in all three of my keeper leagues, and I would happily trade one of my lesser guys for him.

      • BrianSTC 2017-03-06 at 13:09

When do you expect him back in the league ?

      • number54 2017-03-06 at 17:26

Well, by that standard, where do you rank Kovalchuk?

        • Dobber 2017-03-06 at 18:28

I dropped Kovalchuk in one league in January. Another league still has him owned. I think Nich is back in 2018-19.

I think Kovalchuk is worthy of cracking this list, or close to it (and he is)

  2. number54 2017-03-06 at 17:25

I feel like these rankings have become far too based on “what have you done for me lately?”, and don’t reflect keeper pool values. For instance, there’s no way that even an injured Stamkos would get traded for Logan Couture. Not even if it won me a championship would I make that deal in a keeper pool (not that I own Stamkos, but he’s a top 10 player, whether he misses the whole season or not). Or hey, how about Stamkos for Corey Perry — you know, that former superstar who’s been maligned in 4 of every 5 ramblings since Christmas?
So, I can appreciate that the ratings tweak upwards or downwards based on current performance, but I think right now that’s eclipsing the long-term expected values of players, and in KEEPER POOL rankings, that should never be the case.

    • Dobber 2017-03-06 at 18:25

      Thanks for the comment
They are definitely based on what have you done for me lately – because that’s how owners think. I’m very active in trade talks in three different leagues in this format and my goodness, slumping players don’t get much respect at all and hot players get a ton. In a keeper!

That being said – Stamkos is overrated. You’ve known me to say this for years and years. I had constant Malkin vs. Stamkos arguments with readers, and even other websites made fun of me for taking the Malkin side (I was right though! Ha!). Malkin was always part of this Big 3 and readers wanted me to make Stamkos into a Big 4. Now we see that Stamkos relied on St. Louis. And not only is the per-game production down, but now he’s a Band-Aid Boy too. Here are the facts: 57, 40, 72, 64 and 20 – that’s production over five seasons. That’s terrible! And if a five-year track record isn’t going to take him out of your Top 10 then I don’t know what will!

In a keeper league, Stamkos does still hold a lot of sway. But in this kind of league – with no IR and it’s total points – how does he have more value than Couture? Any team that is competing for prize money can’t use him – his 20 points on a pro team would eliminate you from contention. Pro teams need at least 40 points from every player right now. So with five or six teams in your league not interested in Stamkos…how much value could he possible have? Half the owners in your league aren’t interested! Sure, they’ll be interested in the summer – so next month Stamkos shoots back up into the Top 15 or 20. But for this season, especially now and in this kind of league, this is his value.

In one league, Stamkos was just traded for Joe Pavelski – and that was a deal that I criticized for giving up too much to get Stamkos. Stamkos is a 70-game, 65-point player now. Proven for five straight years (and that’s being generous), and the Stamkos owner just got all of Pavelski’s points when frankly I would have almost traded Stamkos for Pavelski even if Stamkos was healthy and had 50 points!

Anyway, that’s my take. Stamkos still has his lovers though, that’s for sure. I’m not one.

      • estarr31 2017-03-07 at 13:13

In my keeper league, 2nd place team traded Stamkos away for Giroux to a team that’s not in the playoff race. He’s in win-now mode and needs the immediate help. Otherwise, that’s an awful trade in a normal year but now? It does make sense.

        • number54 2017-03-09 at 13:05

Okay, but would you trade Giroux for Couture?

          • Dobber 2017-03-09 at 13:48

That’s how you win. If everyone had the ‘win when you have a chance’ mentality then they would win more. Instead of the ‘naw, I’ll just build for next year rather than lose the deal and give up my future’ mentality.

Just to see…I put Stamkos in as healthy and gave him 70 points for this season. He comes in at 24th when I do that because I had increased his injury-risk factor. I wouldn’t bet even $100 on him ever getting 80 points again. People acquiring Stamkos are acquiring a name. Similar if they acquire Corey Perry and expect an 85-point guy…they can’t acquire Stamkos and expect a 90-point guy.

Now is not the time to acquire Stamkos. Not until more people come down to earth about their expectations on him. If he could guarantee me 80 games a year (as much as a player can – like a Wheeler or a Marchand), then he’s a Top 10 guy. But he’s going to miss 10 games a year at min

          • number54 2017-03-09 at 15:25

In his career? I’d take that bet, easily. One healthy season next to Kucherov and it’s in the bag.

          • Dobber 2017-03-09 at 21:43

See? Even you believe that Stamkos needs help (Kucherov) doing anything productive

          • number54 2017-03-16 at 09:26

I think he needs help to get the kind of numbers he did when he had St Louis to his right. Without that, I think he’s a .92 p/g player, which should be good for somewhere in the top 30, at LEAST.

      • number54 2017-03-09 at 13:21

Stamkos has averaged 0.92 points per game for the 4 years since St Louis left (if you go over the past 5 his ppg go up). Over that span, 42 players have reached that mark in any season (10+ games played)– translating to only 11 players on an average year. So put him dead last on that list if you want, because he’s a band-aid boy. That’s still 11th in the league (currently owned by Scheifele at 132.6) By all means, drop his value by 25% if you want, because he’s injured. That still puts him at a value of ~100 which would have him 30th in the league; still a cool 20 points and 20 ranks higher than Couture.

  3. estarr31 2017-03-07 at 13:10

How should we value Kris Letang moving forward? When healthy, he can be the 3rd best D in the league but obviously he’s going to miss games. 65-70 games from him is still worth a lot. And if he ever does figure out how to stay healthy he could have a huge year, especially with his multi-category impact. With his age, he should be at a high level over the next two years at least.

Through some big trades this year I’m fortunate to now have Karlsson, Byfuglien, and Letang on my roster and I’m thinking of keeping them along with Crosby and Marchand (keep 6).
Question would be, should I keep Letang and then only one of P. Kessel, B.Wheeler, J.Carter? Or should I keep two of the latter over Letang?

In a league that scores blocks, offensive defenseman are so valuable in this format, I have no problem keeping 3 D (start 5 Def with 9 Offense).

    • Dobber 2017-03-12 at 09:58

Offer both Buff and Letang around – whoever gets you more in a trade, move him. I’m not as certain that Buffy rebounds as you say. Letang is touch and go – next five years he probably plays 60- games twice and 70 games three times. That’s just what you get from him, but he’s close to a point per game when he plays.

      • starz31 2017-03-29 at 13:16

I don’t think Buff has a long-future ahead of him at his age and with the minutes on his body. But, for next year? Maybe two more years? He could still be provide a lot of value in a multi-cat league, even with less offensive stats. I still assume a decline, but not a huge decline just yet. I look at Chara as a fair comp, and he was scoring 70+ points in his mid 30s.

Am I missing the Ageless Wonder on this list? Not a top 300 player yet plays top line and 2nd PP unit.
Should I even have him on my roster?! My other options for drops would be J. Staal, Vrbata, Perreault
    Thanks for the help

    • Dobber 2017-03-12 at 09:56

Jagr is just off the list, and out of those four players I would drop Jagr

  5. Jordan 2017-03-11 at 22:26

Sorry…(this coming from a leaf fan)

    David Pastrnak:

    Age: 20
    Goals: T-12th
Shots: 10th (less GP than anyone ranked higher)
    PPG – 15th
    Dobber Keeper Rank: 44th

Notes: Proven on line /w vets (Marchand/Bergeron) and drives a line without them (Krejci/Whoever)

Lowest ranked player with a higher ppg than Pastrnak is Eichel at 23rd. I’d just would like to understand this ranking system a bit more, especially in a points only league? Guys similar to him in points and age are so much higher it’s confusing, even guys he is currently outpacing.

    • Dobber 2017-03-12 at 09:55

      Sure, no problem Jordan.

To me, Pastrnak is hitting his upside. Whereas similar players above him have a higher upside. To me. But the main reason that has knocked him a little lower – in three pro seasons he’s missed 7 games (this year), 25 games (last year) and about 10 games the year prior. In points-only leagues, if a 75-point guy misses 10 games per year, then really he’s only a 65-point guy, right? The risk to miss games is there, and it’s a pretty ‘reliable’ risk – you can almost count on him missing games. And until he plays 80 or even 78 games, he’s going to have that hanging over him

      • Jordan 2017-03-16 at 01:11

        Hey Dobber,

I can’t argue against his injury history, it’s there and it’s real. However, looking at the actual injuries I think we can pretty safely assume that an 18 yr old at 165lbs suffering minor injuries (or serious ones, RNH, McDavid etc) is a normal thing. Other injuries he’s suffered like a cracked bone in his foot came from taking or blocking a shot off his skate, that is just bad puck luck.

If i though he was 5 or 10 spots misplaced in the rankings I wouldn’t even post to be honest ha, I just clearly believe in him a lot and I think everyone will come around to him if they haven’t already. He is now at 62 pts in 63 games (30G) and IMO at 20 yrs old has not reached his ceiling.

        • Dobber 2017-03-16 at 01:46

Yes, but when I posted this article he had 51 points in 55 games. Obviously each month a young player with no track record would move upward with continued production. I won’t shoot a player from 150th to 20th in November because he had 12 points in 12 games. But I’d move him from 150th to 110th (for example). And so on, each month.
You see he went 62, 57, 44. Next month I’m guessing he’s 35th. But I won’t give a guy a Top 20 rating without any track record. Also, don’t overrate his upside. He’s exceeded expectations (playing with marchand) and I don’t believe there is another gear. My opinion.
