Fantasy Take: Habs Trade Shaw To Blackhawks

The Montreal Canadiens have traded forward Andrew Shaw back to the Chicago Blackhawks, along with a seventh-round pick in 2021, in exchange for a second- and a seventh-round pick in 2020 and a third-round pick in 2021.

The Canadiens have also traded forward Nicolas Deslauriers to the Anaheim Ducks in exchange for a 2020 fourth-round pick.

The Canadiens receive:

A net result of three draft picks, as well as nearly $5 million in cap space. The Habs are rumored to be interested in several players, including Matt Duchene, Jake Gardiner, and Anders Lee. Stay tuned for the full impact on the Canadiens, as they may not be done.

The Blackhawks receive:

A forward who is known more for his play on the edge that his scoring throughout his career. However, Shaw scored a career-high 47 points (19g-28a), while doing so in just 63 games. His 0.75 PTS/GP in 2018-19 was easily the highest of his career, while his 71 PIM and 128 hits gave him underrated value in multicategory leagues.

This is a somewhat surprising move for the Blackhawks, who have had their share of issues with cap space and now also add a former player who has also had injury issues (missed at least 14 games over each of the past three seasons). However, a cap hit of nearly $4 million for a player who finished 25th in the league in 5-on-5 goals for per 60 minutes (1.19) might not be a terrible investment for a player that they are already familiar with.

Shaw should slot in as a middle-6 forward either as a center or a winger. He won’t likely crack the top-unit power play, but he will likely be used as a net-front presence on the second-unit power play. That probably won’t move his point total up, unless he manages to stay healthy for a full season. His aggressive style of play might have something to do with the injuries.

Players this helps:

No one in particular (wait and see with Montreal)

Players this hurts:

Drake Caggiula or Brendan Perlini (in terms of second-unit power-play minutes)

Dylan Sikura, Dominik Kubalik, or Anton Wedin (in terms of making the NHL roster – most likely Wedin will start the season in the AHL)
