Fantasy Impact: Kase Shipping Up To Boston

Ian Gooding

2020-02-21

The Anaheim Ducks have traded winger Ondrej Kase to the Boston Bruins in exchange for veteran forward David Backes, defenseman Axel Andersson and a 2020 first-round draft pick.

The key piece in the trade is Kase, a middle-six winger who adds some much-needed forward depth for the Bruins. The trade served another purpose for the Bruins, who by shedding the Backes contract now have additional money to re-sign other players like Torey Krug and Jake DeBrusk this offseason.

Kase could play with either David Krejci or Charlie Coyle at even strength, and he is likely to play on the second-unit power play with Krejci, Coyle, Charlie McAvoy, and Matt Grzelcyk. This would likely bump Karson Kuhlman down to a bottom-6 role if Kase plays with Krejci, while Danton Heinen could be bumped off the second unit.

One note if you are planning to add Kase right away: Kase missed the last five games with flu-like symptoms and will join the Bruins on Monday. From there he will be re-evaluated, so when he will debut with the Bruins has not yet been determined.

Meanwhile for Anaheim, Kase has developed chemistry with Sam Steel and Max Jones, who could be hurt by move since they had benefitted from Kase's speed. Backes could play for the Ducks, so this could simply be a swap of forwards if he does. Backes wasn’t playing for Bruins, who theoretically gain a forward with the trade.

Andersson is currently playing for the Moncton Wildcats of the QMJHL. View his Dobber Prospects profile.
