Fantasy Impact: Marleau to Pittsburgh

The Pittsburgh Penguins have acquired veteran winger Patrick Marleau from the San Jose Sharks for a third-round draft pick. If the Penguins win the Stanley Cup, the pick becomes a second rounder.
The Penguins get: A former point-per-game forward and eight-time 25-goal scorer. Marleau’s production has slowed, dipping from 0.57 points-per-game to 0.45 in 2018-19 to 0.34 this season, likely the 40-year-old’s last in the NHL.
Fantasy Players Impacted: With Tomas Hertl and Logan Couture out of the lineup and Joe Thornton likely/possibly traded later today, the Sharks have three proven and legit forwards who can produce – Kevin Labanc, Timo Meier and Evander Kane. Those three are going to get tons of PP time. Also keep your eye on Alexander True, a big, undrafted forward who has four points in nine games and has been tearing up the AHL for the past year and a half. He’s 22 and 6-foot-5 with second line upside.
On the Penguins, they currently have Jake Guentzel, Nick Bjugstad, Zach Aston-Reese and Dominik Kahun on the sidelines, with Andrew Agozzino lost to Anaheim via waivers. Kahun should return soon, while Aston-Reese and Bjugstad are looking at two or three more weeks yet. Marleau, for now, pushes Dominik Simon down the lineup. He has a lot of respect in the league and he may even start off on the Sidney Crosby line with Jason Zucker. Patric Hornqvist gets pushed down as well. Brandon Tanev has had a productive season but his ice time is going to get cut a little as he will be strictly fourth line now.
Fantasy Players this helps, in order:
- Alexander True (prospect profile here)
- Marleau
- Antti Suomela
Fantasy Players this hurts, in order:
- Patric Hornqvist
- Dominik Simon
- Dominik Kahun
