Fantasy Impact: Holy Moley, Montreal Signs Toffoli

The Montreal Canadiens have signed free agent winger Tyler Toffoli to a four-year contract worth $4.25M AAV.

The Habs get: A four-time 23-goal scorer and one-time 31-goal man who at 28 is in the heart of his prime. There are still a few good years ahead of him. At least four?

Fantasy Players Impacted: This isa good fit for Toffoli, as he joins a team that really needs his goals from the wing. The Habs have been doing well in getting the most out of their wingers of late, specifically Tomas Tatar suddenly becoming a 60-plus point player. Last season, the only truly stable line combination that Montreal had was Philip Danault centering Tatar and Brendan Gallagher. With Max Domi now gone, the next set of talented players is made up of Jonathan Drouin, Nick Suzuki and Toffoli. So that is your likely line combo. And it looks like a very solid one, arguably becoming the top line if Drouin shakes off last year's injury and bounces back to full form. Both Drouin and Suzuki tend to set it up, and Toffoli is the perfect finisher.

This signing knocks Artturi Lehkonen down to the third line again. He has been a perennial "is this the year?" guy. And the answer always seems to be: "no". Looks like that won't change in 2020-21. But for what it's worth, a third line of Lehkonen, Jesperi Kotkaniemi and Josh Anderson is pretty sweet, boasting a bit of everything including decent offense.

So where does Joel Armia fit in? Um…

Armia is not ideal on the fourth line. But that's where he's stuck now and that means he'll start getting some healthy scratches. We see it all the time. Scoring-line winger gets bumped to the fourth line due to the numbers game. Scoring-line winger fails to score while playing alongside Joe Lunchbox and Tommy Stonehands. Scoring-line winger gets sent to the press box. Eventually he gets traded or waived, only to do well elsewhere. Not that Armia is Joel Gretzky. But he's a potential 20-goal, 45-point guy and he won't get there now.
