Fantasy Impact: Maple Leafs Acquire Alex Galchenyuk

The Toronto Maple Leafs have acquired journeyman winger Alex Galchenyuk from the Carolina Hurricanes for minor leaguer David Warsofsky and prospect Egor Korshkov.

The Maple Leafs get: a two-time 50-point player and five-time 40-point player Galchenyuk, who just turned 27 three days ago and was the third-overall draft pick in 2012. Reaching 40 points in the NHL five times before turning 27 is quite an achievement, but things have really gone sideways for Galchenyuk over the past two years. To the point where all he could manage was a one-year contract as an unrestricted free agent, worth barely over $1 million – and then quickly getting shipped out of two after just eight games with Ottawa.

The Hurricanes get: David Warsofsky is the younger brother of Carolina’s AHL affiliate Chicago Wolves’ coach Ryan. That’s a nice bonus. But they also get Egor Korshkov, who is a fine prospect. Korshkov likely saw the writing on the wall in Toronto in terms of their depth and his odds of getting on the team at any point soon, and may have hinted that he’d prefer another organization. That’s just my own personal speculation. The Leafs could just as easily have seen the same thing, and made the move on their own in shoring up depth that could help immediately if needed. Korshkov is a power forward with top-six upside, though at 22 he will still need a couple of years.

Fantasy Players impacted: The Leafs don’t need Galchenyuk. They already have players who are on the taxi squad that they can turn to for help: Nic Petan, Alexander Barabanov, Joey Anderson and Pierre Engvall are each players who would play more games had they been with any other organization. Here, the Leafs add more depth as an insurance policy, and they shed themselves one contract (teams have a 50-contract limit). But I don’t see Galchenyuk as an every day player, but obviously GM Kyle Dubas feels that if given a chance, maybe he can find his way. And the fact that he doesn’t have to quarantine for 14 days certainly helps. A career resurrection is a long shot, but at least there’s a chance however small.

All in all, this trade doesn’t even cause a ripple in the fantasy hockey world. No players are impacted, from a fantasy standpoint.
