Top 10 Hot Players

One of the best tools on this site is the hot/cold tool that you can find here.

I try to look at it once every couple of weeks to see if there are under-the-radar players that might be found lurking. It doesn't take a genius to realize elite players such as Connor McDavid, Patrick Kane and David Pastrnak are usually on hot streaks.

However, some names may be surprises, especially depending on where you live. In Canada, for instance, there's not as much talk about divisions outside of the North, so it may be tough to get a gauge on how some players are performing.

It's also helpful as it takes away the disadvantage of a slow start. A first-line player, for example, might have gone pointless in his first eight games, but then had eight points in his next eight. If you just looked at his overall stats, you would think he was still struggling.

This is where the hot/cold tool is so handy.

Below are 10 players who may not be getting the recognition they deserve for their recent hot streaks. Some of these players may be available on your waiver wire. If you're an owner, this might be a good time to try to sell high.

10. Sean Couturier

Couturier is making up for lost time after missing six games with a rib injury. He's been excellent since returning to the lineup, with a six-game point streak where he has five goals and 10 points to go along with 17 shots, seven hits and 52 faceoff wins. He is tied for 12th in the league in points since Feb. 7, but has played fewer games than everyone ahead of him (the Flyers had several games postponed due to COVID-19 protocols). Jonathan Huberdeau, for example, has 12 points in that period, but has played twice as many games.

9. Filip Forsberg

Forsberg is the only bright spot in Nashville this season, but it's just recently he's been consistently performing. While he had 11 points in his first 13 games, he was pointless in seven of those games. However, in his last eight games, he has only gone pointless in two games and has eight points in that span. Also a boon for Forsberg owners is his shooting. His 3.8 shots per game is a career high and 0.7 shots per game more than a season ago. It's also the seventh-highest shot rate in the league this season.

8. Carl Soderberg

It shouldn't be any surprise that Soderberg is on a hot streak. It all started on Feb. 11, even though he went pointless that game. On that day, he was put on the top power-play unit and saw his overall ice time rise a couple of minutes a game. He now has points in six of his last seven games, and eight points in that span. Don't expect this streak to last too much longer. He's still being used mostly in a defensive role and his ice time is inconsistent from game to game. If you can spare the room on your roster, you could probably pick him up without any worries about dropping him when he gets cold.

7. Cam Atkinson

Despite going pointless on Sunday, Atkinson still belongs in the hottest category as he has eight goals and 13 points in his last 12 games. He seems to have shaken off his disappointing 2019-20 when he had an 82-game pace of 48 points. This year, he would be on pace for 61. Can he keep it up? Well, the pessimist would say he's averaging 2.7 shots per game, his lowest since 2014-15. That's about half a shot per game less than last year and a full shot per game less than two seasons ago. The optimist would say Atkinson is on the top power-play unit again, on the ice for almost 60 per cent of Columbus' man-advantage minutes. That's a good sign, despite Atkinson only having four power-play points this year.

6. Nick Leddy

Leddy has been on a tear lately, with nine points in his last 10 games (since Feb. 11). That's tied for second-most among defensemen during that time, tied with Drew Doughty and only one point behind Kris Letang. This is one of those cases where sometimes defensemen go on hot streaks despite nothing really pointing toward why. Five of his nine points have come on the power play, where Leddy sits on the second unit.

5. Mats Zuccarello

The Wild forward missed a good chunk of the season after having arm surgery, but he's been excellent since getting back into the lineup. He went pointless in 13 minutes in his first game back, but since then he has 11 points in six games. At the start, it doesn't look like there's any big reason for such a hot start. His ice time and power-play time are pretty much on par with what he averaged last year, and his 2.0 shots per game this season matches his career average. The biggest thing is he is being used in a top-six role with talented players. Last year, he played mostly with Eric Staal, Jason Zucker and Zach Parise at the start of the season, and Alex Galchenyuk and Marcus Foligno near the end. This year, he's mostly with super-rookie Kirill Kaprizov. That's a big step up.

4. Joel Farabee

Farabee may have tricked some people at the start of the season, but he's been consistent over the past nine games. After notching four points in the opening game, fantasy general managers rushed to pick him up off the waiver wire. Then he had only one point in his next eight games, and fantasy general managers rushed to drop him back onto the waiver wire. Now he has 12 points in his last nine games, including two three-point games ad only been held pointless in two of those nine games. He's also averaging 2.6 shots per game, and failed to register a shot in only one game this season. The coaching staff is rewarding him for production. In 12 games from Jan. 13 to Feb. 5, Farabee averaged 14:10 per game and 1:16 power-play time. In the six games since, he's averaged 17:53 per game with 3:43 of power-play time.

3. Neal Pionk

With 11 points in his last 12 games, Pionk has quietly become a top-10 defenseman in points-only leagues. His 16 points on the season put him tied for seventh in the league and five back of the leader, Quinn Hughes. The biggest concern for Pionk owners is his lack of power-play time as the Jets seem determined to have Josh Morrissey succeed with the man advantage. Just like last year, the Jets started the season with Morrissey leading the top power-play unit. Eventually, the Jets needed an improvement, switched to Pionk and the power play took off. This year, the Jets have a middle-of-the-pack power play with Morrissey on the top unit. Maybe a switch will be coming again, but it has to be worrying that this is the second year in a row the team went with Morrissey.

2. Drake Batherson

Back in November, I listed Batherson as a bubble keeper, with the caveat that if you had already dropped him, you probably won't get him back. I surmised that he had a good shot to toy with 50 points this season after he was dynamite in the AHL and had nothing left to prove there. With 15 points in 23 games, he would be on pace for 53 points over an 82-game season. Those stats are buoyed by eight points in his last five games, but he's a lock for top-six minutes and is on the top power-play unit. His eight power-play points lead the team.

1. Jonathan Bernier

You wouldn't think that you would normally consider a Detroit goalie to be wielding a hot stick, but that's exactly what is going on with Bernier. In his last six starts, Bernier is 4-2 with a 1.86 GAA and a 0.944 SV%. All six of those starts have been quality starts, as he only gave up one goal in a loss to Chicago and two goals in a game against Nashville. Since Feb. 13, only Kaapo Kahkonen and Tristan Jarry have more wins, while Bernier is first in saves, third in save percentage and fourth in goals against average in that time.
