Fantasy Take: Foligno To Maple Leafs

The Toronto Maple Leafs have acquired wingers Nick Foligno from the Columbus Blue Jackets and Stefan Noesen from the San Jose Sharks. The Blue Jackets receive Toronto's first-round pick in the 2021 draft and fourth-round pick in the 2022 draft. The Sharks receive Toronto's fourth-round pick in the 2021 draft.

This is Toronto's version of Tampa Bay's acquisition of Blake Coleman last season: a forward who can provide some offense but also plenty of grit and defensive ability that becomes increasingly necessary for the rigors of playoff hockey. Foligno, who was the captain of the Blue Jackets, will also provide that experience and leadership that teams covet. Foligno is a two-time 25-goal scorer and has reached 10 goals and 30 points in his last seven seasons, but at 16 points (7 G, 9 A) in 42 games, it's fair to say his offense isn't what it used to be.

Best-case scenario, Foligno is inserted on either the Auston Matthews line or the John Tavares line as well as the first-unit power play. This is more probable come playoff time, which if happens could push a player like Alex Galchenyuk down the roster and even into the press box. This scenario would provide a major boost to Foligno's value, as playing on the Matthews/Mitch Marner line gives him instant credibility. Playing on the Tavares/William Nylander line wouldn't be so bad, either. Zach Hyman could also be moved out of the top 6, but at least his style of play is a good fit throughout the lineup.

Worst-case scenario, Foligno is another Wayne Simmonds, an over-30 banger who may be used in the top 6 at times. However, that would mean Foligno would see a major drop in minutes from his time in Columbus (18:09 this season). Like Simmonds, Foligno's value is highest in leagues that count hits, as he currently leads the Blue Jackets with 109 hits. (On a side note, David Savard, who was traded to Tampa Bay, was second with 95 hits, so a major physical portion of their lineup is now gone.)

Foligno is a UFA this offseason, so this trade could be nothing more than a rental for the Leafs. A first-round pick plus is a lot to give up for a potential rental, so the Leafs are going all in on escaping the North Division and winning it all this season. Another first-round exit would make this trade look horrible on the Leafs.
