Fantasy Take: Adin Hill on his Way to San Jose

The San Jose Sharks have acquired goalie Adin Hill and a 2022 seventh-round pick from the Arizona Coyotes for goalie Josef Korenar and a 2022 second-round pick.

In Hill, the Sharks acquire a goalie who has been on the verge of becoming an NHLer for the past few seasons as an injury replacement to Darcy Kuemper and Antti Raanta. In San Jose, the 25-year-old should finally have the opportunity to be a full-time NHL goalie and provide competition for the much-maligned Martin Jones.

The Coyotes had incentive to make this trade in that by protecting Kuemper, Hill was a strong candidate to be selected by the Seattle Kraken. Whether he played in Arizona, Seattle, or San Jose, Hill appeared destined to no longer need to buy time in the AHL, where he has played since 2016. Given Jones' sub-.900 SV% over the past three seasons, fantasy owners should be more tempted to draft Hill over Jones. In fact, the Sharks may still decide to buy out the remaining three years of Jones' $5 million-plus per season contract. If so, then they would be in the market for a veteran 1A/backup for Hill.

The Coyotes' goaltending situation is anything but settled at the moment. They have been rumored to be shopping Darcy Kuemper, but with Hill no longer in the picture may decide to hang onto him for the final year of his contract. Or they may go complete rebuild after the expansion draft and trade Kuemper anyway. Korenar provides the Coyotes with a goalie that they can expose for the Seattle draft, but with limited NHL experience (10 games late in the season), it seems unlikely he is selected. He is a possible backup for the Yotes, assuming they do not add any other goalies.
