Fantasy Impact: Arizona Brings Dmitrij Jaskin Back to the NHL, Sign Ryan Dzingel

The Arizona Coyotes have signed power forward Dmitrij Jaskin to a one-year contract worth a whopping $3.2M. They also sign winger Ryan Dzingel to a one-year deal worth $1.1M.

The Coyotes Get: two fill-in wingers to temporarily fill the void on the suddenly-rebuilding Coyotes, to give their prospects in the system more time to marinate. Dzingel is unlikely to bounce back. His one great season was a contract year when he had 56 points in 78 games with Ottawa and Columbus in 2018-19. With Carolina, a big contract in his back pocket, he struggled mightily. Even getting traded back to Ottawa didn't help. He's only 29, which is too young to say he's finished, and he did have bad puck luck (4.8 5on5 S% last season).

Jaskin, on the other hand, is a power forward just coming into his own at a time in his life when most big forwards come into their own – in that 25/26/27 years of age sweet spot. The 6-3, 225-pound forward had 99 points in 51 QMJHL games his last season with Moncton. He made the mistake of making the NHL early, and promptly getting buried on the depth line rather than seeing top minutes in the AHL. With both St. Louis and Washington he was unable to get out of the niche that was carved out for him.

Going to the KHL changed all that. He posted 123 points in 117 games over two years there, along with a whopping 127 minutes in penalties. Given the size of that contract, it is clear that the Coyotes want him to play scoring-line minutes and have expectations of 50-plus points and a hell of a lot of Hits.

Fantasy Players Impacted: Dzingel may have an impact early on in terms of taking ice time away from the likes of Lawson Crouse or Christian Fischer. He may keep Jan Jenik out of the NHL a little longer. If Dzingel falters, which I suspect he might, then those three players creep back into the picture. And although Barrett Hayton is a center, Dzingel will also eat up some PP time early.

Jaskin I think will be most lasting. As a power forward he most definitely gobbles up ice time for the up-and-coming Crouse. And again, with that big contract he is also going to be getting power-play time. NHL teams will always try their best to justify bigger-than-expected contracts by giving the player the best opportunities. Neither of these signings will hurt Phil Kessel nor Clayton Keller (nor even Nick Schmaltz) – and Loui Eriksson is not fantasy relevant regardless.
