Fantasy Impact: The Avalanche Acquire Josh Manson

The Anaheim Ducks have traded right-shot defenseman Josh Manson to the Colorado Avalanche for prospect Drew Helleson and a 2023 second-round draft pick.

The Ducks get: Basically, Josh Manson from nine years ago. Plus a nice draft pick. Helleson, when he bulks up (he's still only 20) could end up being the exact size as Manson's 6-3, 218 pounds. He's also a right-shot, is very strong defensively and has second pairing offensive upside. Prospect Profile here.

The Avs get: A tough, effective stay-at-home defenseman with 40-point upside (he once had 37 in 2017-18). This is a powerhouse team without any glaring weakness, other than perhaps two goaltenders who are somewhat injury prone. With Samuel Girard out until early April, Manson has a spot in the top four waiting for him. But upon Girard's return, Manson could be the best No.5 blueliner in the league.

Fantasy players impacted: On the Avs, the impact is huge for Manson. This is a team that is going to make Devon Toews a 70-point player. Just being on the ice gets these players points. Manson is on pace for 15 or 20 points this season. Now I wonder if he can take a run at 30. And that's with no PP time. Manson gives the team a third right-shot guy (Cale Makar and Erik Johnson the other two). Currently, their left-shot defensemen are Toews, Girard, Bowen Byram, Jack Johnson, Ryan Murray, Jacob MacDonald and Kurtis MacDermid.

This acquisition pretty much eliminates the chance of prospect Justin Barron getting another recall. It also hints that maybe Byram will not return this season. Or, alternatively, it would now be easier to use him as a trade chip to acquire a big-name player such as Claude Giroux.

Over in Anaheim, there is a big void to fill. This probably results in Josh Mahura, Brendan Guhle and Simon Benoit (all lefties) seeing more time. Of the three, Mahura is the one of fantasy interest. But so far, his NHL stints haven't been very lucrative. Or perhaps 26-year-old Brogan Rafferty finally gets a real chance. He's a right-handed shot and it's worth watching.
