Fantasy Take: Flames Acquire Jarnkrok

Seattle finally made a trade that actually looks like they got more than fair value on, netting three picks from the Flames (the highest of which is a second rounder) in exchange for versatile forward Calle Jarnkrok.

What the Flames Get:

The Flames already had a deep forward core, and they add an underrated scorer who has 50-point potential and has been heating up of late. Jarnkrok also has some solid defensive metrics, but aside from that telling us that he won’t get the prime offensive deployment, it’s not worth diving into here.

Jarnkrok can play up, down, and across the lineup, and where he may end up fitting in best is centring Tyler Toffoli and Andrew Mangiapane; a spot held by Adam Ruzicka over the last few games. That would certainly be an upgrade for Jarnkrok over Alex Wennberg and Jaden Schwartz. A 50-point pace for Jarnkrok the rest of the way should be the expectation here.

What the Kraken Get:

Picks to stockpile the shallowest prospect pool in the NHL.

For their roster considerations, the Kraken are going to have to fill some of the defensive minutes vacated by Jarnkrok. That either means the player jumping up to eat Jarnkrok’s ice time (Morgan Geekie/Kole Lind) is going to be playing more in his own zone, or we’re going to see someone like Jordan Eberle end up having to take more of those draws, freeing up a more offensively inclined player. The end result is really the same, in that the addition by subtraction situation doesn’t really apply here; it's status quo, or even a small downgrade for the fantasy value of others on the Kraken.
