Ramblings: Pastrnak, Chabot Return; Panthers and Bobrovsky Extend Win Streak (Apr 24)

With Frederik Andersen injured and the Hurricanes playing the first of back-to-backs, Pyotr Kochetkov made his NHL debut. Kochetkov stopped 17 of 19 shots he faced to help the Hurricanes to a 3-2 overtime win over the Devils. The Canes were playing their first of back-to-backs, so Antti Raanta will likely start today (Sunday) against the Islanders. Kochetkov was a 2019 second-round pick and has posted some solid AHL numbers (2.09 GAA, .921 SV%), so he appears to be in a good spot to battle Jack LaFontaine to be the Canes' goalie of the future. For more on Kochetkov, see his Dobber Prospects profile.

Sidney Crosby has reached 30 goals for the 10th time in his career. He scored his 30th and added an assist in the Penguins' 7-2 win in Detroit.

Evgeni Malkin scored a pair of goals and took six shots in his return from a four-game suspension.

Kris Letang scored a goal and added two assists and four shots. Over his last 58 games, Letang has been nearly a point-per-game player (56 PTS in 58 GP). Since November 29, only Roman Josi, Cale Makar, and Victor Hedman have scored more points than the 34-year-old Letang. Every offseason I keep thinking that retaining Letang might be a mistake because of his injury history, and each time he's been proving me wrong. It will be very interesting to see where he lands next season, especially if that team is not Pittsburgh.

After sitting out the past eight games with an undisclosed injury, David Pastrnak returned to the Bruins' lineup, scoring his 39th goal while adding an assist. Pasta was back on his most recent line with Taylor Hall and Erik Haula, giving the Bruins a top-6 that will be difficult to contend with in the playoffs. If you are still playing meaningful games in fantasy, be sure to activate Pastrnak as soon as possible.

Hampus Lindholm and Linus Ullmark also returned to the Bruins' lineup on Saturday. Ullmark stopped 30 of 31 shots he faced in the 3-1 win over the Rangers.

Brad Marchand broke an unusual (at least for him) four-game point drought with an assist on Pastrnak's goal. However, Marchand has now gone 10 games without scoring a goal. I'd have to be in a fairly shallow format before I'd consider benching Marchand, though.

With a pair of assists on Saturday, Victor Olofsson has three consecutive multipoint games. His season can be broken down into three parts: 1) 13 points in his first 13 games, 2) 15 points in his next 39 games, and 3) 21 points in his last 18 games. The Sabres don't play again until Thursday, but he might be an ideal waiver-wire pickup if you can wait that long.

Thomas Chabot was expected to miss the rest of the regular season with a broken hand. The Senators have long since been eliminated from playoff contention, so they don’t really have any pressing need to bring him back this season. Yet there he was on Saturday, logging 20 minutes and assuming first-unit power-play duties again. He was on pace for 50 points before the injury, so get him back into your lineup. For leagues that count icetime, he is the league leader with a 26:16 ATOI.

Parker Kelly has four points and 10 shots in his last four games, including a goal and an assist on Saturday. He was projected to be a bottom-6 forward and has lukewarm AHL numbers this season, but he's stood out in the Senators games I've caught this week. For more on Kelly, see his Dobber Prospects profile, recently updated by Wild West writer and now Senators prospects writer Grant Campbell.

Mark Kastelic had a nice multicategory game, although he probably wasn't in any lineups – 2 G, 5 PIM, 3 SOG, 1 HIT, 1 BLK. Kastelic's first NHL goal and the fight took place on the very same play! I saw Kastelic play a game in junior once and can say he definitely has an edge to his game (Dobber Prospects profile).

Anton Forsberg earned a win, and by saying that I mean he really earned a win. Forsberg made 44 saves in the Sens' 6-4 win over Montreal.

Auston Matthews returned to the Leafs' lineup after missing the past three games. He was held without a point but took seven shots.

Matthews' linemate Michael Bunting left this game in the first period with a potential ankle injury. After the game, Sheldon Keefe told reporters that Bunting would miss time for sure. Look for a replacement if you've been relying on Bunting.

Claude Giroux as a Flyer this season: 41 PTS in 57 GP. Claude Giroux as a Panther: 20 PTS in 16 GP, including a goal and two assists on Saturday. We told you the trade to Florida would help his value.

The Panthers have now won 13 consecutive games. That means Sergei Bobrovsky has won his last six games, and he's also registered five consecutive quality starts after a rough patch in late March/early April. Over those last five quality starts, Bob has not allowed more than two goals in each. There's still another week left, but he seems to be nearing the playoffs on a roll.

Nikita Kucherov and Steven Stamkos each scored a goal and added two assists in the Lightning's 6-2 win over Nashville. Stamkos now has three points in each of his last three games and multiple points in each of his last five games. Add it all up and he has 13 points over his last five games. Kucherov has goals in five consecutive games and a five-game point streak with 11 points over that span. Tampa will not be an easy out in the playoffs either.

Ross Colton has found his scoring touch with five goals over his last three games, including a goal on Saturday. Over his past 14 games, Colton has 11 goals while primarily playing on a depth line with Nick Paul and Brandon Hagel. If you're picking the Lightning to threepeat, you might want to consider Colton, Paul, and Hagel as late-round picks if you are in a larger playoff pool.

Juuse Saros was pulled after allowing all six Lightning goals. Fortunately, I decided to sit him knowing that this matchup might not be a good one. Saros now has two really bad starts over his last three games, so he hasn't been as reliable as normal. The Predators' schedule doesn't get any easier, as they face Colorado and Calgary before what might be a reprieve against Arizona in their final game. But with the Coyotes game being the second of a back-to-back, David Rittich might get the start so that Saros has an extra day of rest before the playoffs. I'm not dropping Saros because he's a potential keeper next season, but I wouldn't blame you if you had to drop him in a single-season league at this point.

Matty Beniers' point streak to begin his career ended at five games, as he was held without a point against Dallas. More on him in yesterday's Ramblings.

Roope Hintz scored a pair of goals for the Stars, who ended a three-game losing streak as they attempt to solidify their hold on a wild-card spot. Hintz has multiple points in five of his last eight games, as well as seven goals and 12 points over those eight games.

Kaapo Kahkonen has earned back-to-back wins, and he's earned quality starts in each of his last five games. His numbers over that span: 1.80 GAA, .943 SV%.

Don't look now but Jordan Binnington has now won five consecutive games. He made consecutive starts for the first time since early January, hanging on to a 5-4 overtime win over Arizona in spite of allowing four goals on 20 shots. Ville Husso is the likely starter for tonight's game against Anaheim, and still the probable Game 1 starter for their series against Minnesota.

Robert Thomas's 15-game point streak came to an end on Saturday, a streak where he had piled up 27 points. Vladimir Tarasenko was able to extend his point streak to nine games with an assist on the overtime goal. Tarasenko has eight goals and 19 points over those nine games.

Justin Faulk scored the overtime winner, his second goal of the game. He also added an assist to go with five shots. Faulk had already reached 40 points for the first time since the 2014-15 season, and with a strong finish he may even be able to push for 50 points.

Brayden Schenn missed Saturday's game with an upper-body injury. That's a notable absence for the Blues, as Schenn had recorded 16 points over his last 14 games. The Blues play again on Sunday, so it's very possible he misses that game as well.

With a pair of goals, Dillon Dube now has six goals over his last six games and a career-high 16 goals. If you are picking Calgary to make it out of the Western Conference, Dube is one name you could consider for your playoff pool.

Elias Lindholm is the 12th player to reach 40 goals this season. Johnny Gaudreau has 39 goals, so it's possible that the Flames have three 40-goal scorers this season, with Matthew Tkachuk already reaching that milestone.

Fortunately for the Kings, they were still able to defeat the Ducks despite this obvious gaffe by Jonathan Quick.
