Fantasy Take: Marchment Moves to Dallas

The Dallas Stars have signed forward Mason Marchment to a four-year contract with a $4.5 million AAV.

Marchment is capitalizing on a surprising breakout season, scoring 47 points in 54 games (0.87 PTS/GP). He also plays with a physical edge with 114 hits and 53 penalty minutes over those 54 games. If he can't repeat that scoring, then at least he has value in bangers leagues.

It's easy to assume that Marchment benefitted from playing on the league's highest scoring team; in particular, with Aleksander Barkov and Jonathan Huberdeau. However, his linemates tended to vary, with his most frequent linemates being Sam Reinhart, Anton Lundell, and Eetu Luostarinen. That being said, his advanced stats (in particular a 12.1 5-on-5 SH% and a 3.7 PTS/60) suggest that his point pace will be difficult to replicate.

Since the Stars' top line of Roope Hintz, Joe Pavelski, and Jason Robertson appears to be set, left wing Marchment seems like a fit for a second line that would include veterans Jamie Benn and Tyler Seguin. Denis Gurianov was the most frequent linemate of the two Stars veterans in 2021-22, and he seems the most likely to be pushed down the lineup.

Marchment would probably have a tougher time cracking the Stars' first-unit power play, since he would need to compete with all of the above options. Marchment averaged just 17.1% of the Panthers' available power-play minutes, although that should increase somewhat in Dallas. The Stars' PP1 unit wasn't used a whole lot more than the PP2 unit under Rick Bowness, while new coach Peter DeBoer also tended not to lean heavily on his first unit in Vegas.

Marchment's overall value shouldn't change much based on him moving to Dallas. He seems due for a scoring regression no matter where he plays. Yet his ability to provide counting peripheral stats (hits, power-play points, shots on goal, to name a few) should improve solely based on the additional icetime he should receive. Marchment averaged barely above 14 minutes per game during his two seasons in Florida.
