Fantasy Take: Capitals Acquire Connor Brown

The Washington Capitals have acquired Connor Brown from the Ottawa Senators for a second-round pick in 2024.

Brown scored 39 points (10 G, 29 A) in 64 games for the Sens in 2021-22. He's been a remarkably consistent scorer during his three seasons in Ottawa with an 82-game pace of around 50 points each season. Although he was below 50% in offensive zone starts, he had the highest average total icetime among Senators forwards. However, the offseason acquisitions of Alex DeBrincat and Claude Giroux made Brown expendable.

Brown should have an opportunity to contribute to the Capitals' top 6 right away. Tom Wilson is expected to be out of the lineup until December after ACL surgery, while Nicklas Backstrom could be out even longer following offseason hip replacement surgery. As a result, Brown could line up alongside Alex Ovechkin and/or Evgeny Kuznetsov, which would give him more scoring opportunities and more offensive-zone time. He can play both left and right wing, so he should be fairly versatile for the Capitals overall. Once Wilson returns, Brown could return to more of a defensive role, while would limit his ceiling.
