Top 100 Roto Rankings: September 2023

Ian Gooding

2023-09-15

Hi everyone. Ian here. Just in time for single-season fantasy drafts, I have some important changes to announce for the Top 100 Roto Rankings.

First, I'd like to introduce Bangers Fantasy Hockey. If you're on Twitter, you might be familiar with their work on player cards such as the one below. You can follow them at @HockeyBangers.

Bangers Fantasy Hockey has completed a thorough re-ranking of this month's Roto Rankings, and they will be doing so again in January. I will still be updating the rankings every month to account for injuries, hot and cold players, and stat corrections that we may have overlooked.

That leads us to our other significant changes, which involve stat categories. We have updated our stat categories to become more "bangers focused," as more and more leagues are trending in this direction. That means we have added penalty minutes and blocked shots to the categories while removing plus/minus.

As well, we've made a minor adjustment to power-play points by changing it to special teams points. If you're not familiar with special teams points, this category adds shorthanded points to power-play points. Given the relatively low number of shorthanded points that players earn in a season, this change should make very little difference to the rankings if your league counts power-play points.

Goalies will also no longer be included in the rankings. We encourage you to check out the Top 100 Keeper League Goaltender rankings for relative goalie values. The Keeper League Goaltender rankings do not have more than a three-year focus and are very much geared toward the immediate team situations necessary for single-season leagues. As well, the updated Roto Rankings are perfect for anyone using a Zero G strategy!

So, the updated stat categories for the Roto Rankings are as follows: Goals, Assists, Special Teams Points, Shots on Goal, Penalty Minutes, Hits, and Blocked Shots. Bangers also has full projections available, which include a bangers score, a top 300 list of projections, and an explanation on how the rankings are built.

These rankings are different from keeper rankings in that they don't extend beyond the current season. They could even be used to determine relative trade value between two or more players listed.

Are there any players that you believe are ranked too high or too low? Did we miss anyone in the top 100, or is there a player there that probably shouldn't be? Do you like the new changes? Let us know in the comments below, and we will consider your feedback when compiling next month's rankings.
