Capped: Low-Cost Players to Add, Including Farabee and Barbashev

Alright my Cap Friends, this week we're looking to make an addition to fantasy leagues everywhere that should help you throughout the rest of the regular season. These players all fit into a parameter as well that they are lower rostered on most fantasy sites and are at or around a $5M cap hit. I know $5M is a little steep but let's be honest, odds are nobody lower than that has much fantasy value unless they are on an ELC or currently making a lower AAV and have signed an extension. There are a couple players out there (one that we'll mention), that I think do fit that, but for the most part here anyone you're looking to add is already on their second or third contract.

Joel Farabee – LW/RW – Philadelphia – 23 years old
Contract: $5M – four years remaining

GP          G             A             PTS         PPP        TOI         PPTOI    SOG       HIT         BKS

47           17           22           39           6              15:55     1:55        110         25           40

I had Joel Farabee highlighted on Sunday afternoon once Owen Tippett left the Flyers game with an apparent knee injury on Saturday, and it looks like I'm not the only one in on this. Farabee has nine points in his last six games played and will likely receive a bigger role in the Flyers offense with Tippett out of the lineup.

I like this addition in case Tippett is out long-term (which may be the case), with the Flyers in need of offense. I do think the risk here could be the Flyers mixing up their lines as I wouldn't be surprised is one day you go through the line rushes and can't figure out why Farabee and Cam Atkinson took shifts on the fourth line in the third period, but hey, that's Philly sometimes. The word is definitely out as far as those going to make a claim as his roster numbers have gone up slightly over on Yahoo but touching near 20% higher on ESPN. This is an addition I'd look to make sooner rather than later.

Jani Haakanpaa – D – Dallas – 31 years old
Contract: $1.5M – Upcoming UFA

GP          G             A             PTS         PPP        TOI         PPTOI    SOG       HIT         BKS

47           2              6              8              0              19:07     0:02        40           111         95

This is my guy right here, perennial block bonus champion on DK Jani Haakanpaa. I do like him for fantasy now more than I had previously because the past two or so games for the Stars he has been on the Dallas top defensive pairing. Granted this is a club that has shifted their lines up a bit slightly, but I'm all in favor of a player on the ice as often as he can be with Jason Robertson and Roope Hintz. The other reason I think he makes sense for fantasy is for those out there who either weigh heavily on blocks and hits, but especially those in category leagues. In my experience in leagues with that setup, there's always that one stat that you know week in and week out, you have a good chance of winning. With Haakanpaa, that could easily put you over the top in hits/blocks with everything else as an added bonus.

Jani Haakanpaa – C/LW/RW – Vegas – 28 years old
Contract: $5M – four years remaining – M-NTC

GP          G             A             PTS         PPP        TOI         PPTOI    SOG       HIT         BKS

48           12           14           26           4              15:26     1:45        74           80           25

Ivan Barbashev a coin flip if he's available in your league, and that's not an exaggeration as he's just over 50% on Fantrax and was close to that number on ESPN before rising last week up to 60%. One of my rules in fantasy is a don't try and put too much stock into players may be a little off the radar that come up big in Playoffs and the Stanley Cup Finals, and for me this past season it was Ivan Barbashev. Granted, I broke this rule in 2018 when I took Lars Eller way earlier than anyone should have but mistakes are how we learn. Barbashev hit a point this season where the offensive production was really lacking and the hits/blocks that he had previously contributed had significantly diminished.

However, since January 11th, he has been a valuable fantasy asset to have. Since that time, he has been shooting the puck more, and that has led to seven points in his last four games played. His ice time is up slightly but still a tad lower than we would like to see for fantasy at just over 16:30 a night but I think lowering ice times across all four lines is something that Vegas is starting to do.
