Injury Ward: Game-Five Status Updates for Each of the Conference Finalists

Logan Clarkson

Good morning, good afternoon, good evening everyone. Welcome to the Injury Ward. My name is Logan Clarkson and every Wednesday I will be chauffeuring you through injury news and updates from around the NHL. I'll do my best to offer useful analysis and opinion as it relates to fantasy throughout. As always, I’d like to thank every single one of you for reading. Now, on to the bad (and some good) news.

Zach Hyman / EDM – Hyman (wrist) will undergo surgery on a broken wrist courtesy of a fly by clipping by Mason Marchment. Edmonton managed to close out a 2-1 lead heading into the third period without Zach Hyman last night at Rogers place against Dallas. Zach was currently sitting fourth on the Oilers with 11 points this post season in 15 games and an insane 111 hits to go along with it. His roughly 17 minutes a night will be sorely missed. Jeff Skinner could get the tap on the shoulder in his place, unless Mattias Ekholm who has just been deemed ready to go enters and they run 11 forwards and seven defenseman.

Jalen Chatfield / CAR – Chatfield (undisclosed) is set to miss Game 5 against the Panthers on Wednesday, per Chip Alexander of The Raleigh News & Observer.

Sean Walker / CAR –  Walker (undisclosed) is also in line to miss game 5 tonight in Carolina. Two missing defenseman for Carolina means that rookies Nikishin and Morrow will both be up against it in game five against the Panthers. The two managed to lock things down giving up no goals while on the ice in their last game and first win of the series. In their game three loss before that Orlov and Nikishin were unfortunately a dash four.

Sam Reinhart / FLA – Reinhart (lower body) participated in Tuesday’s optional practice and has been activated for Game 5 against Carolina on Wednesday. Jesper Boqvist had moved into Reinhart's spot at even strength for the last two games. Florida has 10 players with at least 10 points in these playoffs, with Aleksander Barkov leading the way with 15.

Niko Mikkola / FLA – Mikkola (upper body) will also return to the lineup Wednesday evening as the Panthers will try for the second time to close out their series with the Canes. Mikkola has put up five points in 14 games so far this post season while averaging just under 20 minutes a night.

Mattias Ekholm / EDM – Ekholm (Undisclosed) was not available for game four of the Oiler's series with the Stars, but that seems to have just changed and he will be ready to play in game 5 if needed. The Oilers defense core has managed just fine without him but after losing Zach Hyman to a broken wrist for the remainder of the playoffs it has me wondering if he will be activated for game five back in Dallas as the Oilers change up the strategy a bit by going with 11 forwards and seven defenseman.

Connor Brown / EDM – Brown (Undisclosed) is most certainly dealing with the effects of a shoulder to the face courtesy of Lian Bischel on Sunday afternoon in Edmonton. The Oilers are now on the thin side up front after Hyman has gone down so it's now a bit more likely that Brown is rushed back when he is remotely ready to enter the lineup. Hopefully it is not a long-lasting head injury for the fella.

Roope Hintz / DAL – Hintz (foot) returned to the Star's squad on Tuesday night while notching 2:57 of powerplay time and 11:10 at even strength. He looked to be fairly healthy until receiving a small chop to the same injured left foot by Evan Bouchard pretty early in the game.

Calvin Pickard / EDM – Pickard (lower body) who saved the oilers from imminent death when Stuart Skinner decided to not show up for the first two games of the first round against Los Angeles, is now back in the lineup and backed up Skinner last night (Tuesday) after being injured against Las Vegas and exiting the lineup for six games. Luckily, Stu has regained good form and is winning Edmonton games at this point which is something that hasn't been said in a while before this run.

AJ Greer / FLA – Greer (undisclosed) is the third Florida player returning to game action tonight (Wednesday) away at Carolina.
