Ramblings: Kucherov and Point Injured, Rantanen Ejected Again, Bowman’s Surprising Start (Nov 23)

After a slow start, Adam Fantilli is justifying why he was a popular sleeper pick in fantasy drafts. With his goal on Saturday, Fantilli now has seven goals in his last eight games and 12 points over his last 11 games. This after he started the season with just two goals and five points over his first 11 games. A drawback of drafting Fantilli is that he wasn't on the Blue Jackets' top power play to start the season, but that has changed with Fantilli bumping Kent Johnson off PP1 several games ago. Fantilli has proven to be a strong even-strength producer anyway, as only four of his 54 points last season were with the man advantage.

While Fantilli has feasted during November, Johnson has starved with just a single point this month, one point in his last 13 games, and no goals in his last 15 games. Johnson was even a healthy scratch for a game on November 11, yet he has still been held without a point since. Johnson has the natural talent to perform much better than this, and his advanced stats (5.1 SH%, 6.4 5on5 SH%, 1.0 PTS/60, 872 PDO) scream a buy-low opportunity. Yet in terms of the here and now, Johnson is droppable in shallower leagues until things turn around.

Dylan Holloway's assist on Saturday broke a three-game stretch without a point and was his first assist in 10 games. Holloway is on pace to finish below 40 points, which would be a dramatic drop from last season's 63-point breakout. The lack of points and St. Louis's scoring decline (2.68 GF/GP) from last season (3.10 GF/GP) could make him droppable in non-bangers leagues. However, you'll want to be more patient with Holloway in bangers leagues. He finished with six hits on Saturday, while he is averaging nearly three hits per game.

In the Stanley Cup Final rematch of the past two seasons, Sergei Bobrovsky was pulled in the second period after allowing four goals on 17 shots. That was Bobrovsky's second really bad start this week, although he won the other one on Monday against Vancouver (five goals on 15 shots). Bob's numbers have taken a hit this season, although that was to be expected on an undermanned Panthers squad. He is still helping fantasy teams with a 10-6-0 record.

Daniil Tarasov took over from Bobrovsky, turning aside all 12 shots. After the game, coach Paul Maurice confirmed that Tarasov would start on Monday against Nashville. Tarasov was already scheduled to start, but just a heads up if you are planning for next week.

The Oilers seem to be a great fit for Jack Roslovic, who scored two goals on Saturday. Playing on the Connor McDavid line, Roslovic has seen his scoring rate increase (17 PTS in 22 GP), and he is taking more shots (2.3 SOG/GP). His shooting percentage (17.6%) is a bit high, but he is worthy of starting in fantasy leagues while he is on the McDavid line and the top power play. Roslovic recorded just two power-play points all season with Carolina last season, but he already has four with the Oilers.

Mattias Ekholm scored a goal with two assists, while Evan Bouchard recorded three assists. Bouchard started the season without a point in his first six games, but he has turned it up recently with 10 points in his last eight games. His recent run means that he is matching last season's scoring pace (20 PTS in 24 GP, 0.83 PTS/GP).

Josh Anderson and Noah Dobson each scored a pair of goals in the Canadiens' 5-2 win over the Maple Leafs. Dobson now has four points in his last three games. He seems to be thriving even without top power-play minutes, which should help allay any of the fears of his move to Montreal. Of all 17 defensemen with at least 15 points (like Dobson), none have as few power-play points as Dobson (2 PPP).

The Lightning's 5-3 win over Washington may have come at a cost. Both Nikita Kucherov and Brayden Point left the game with undisclosed injuries. Kucherov left the game in the second period after taking a hit, while Point also left the game in the second period. After the game, coach Jon Cooper didn't provide an update on either player. The Lightning next play on Monday against Philadelphia, so check the Frozen Tools player news for updates before puck drop.

Kucherov scored a goal and added two assists before exiting, while Brandon Hagel had two goals and two assists. After a slow start with just one point in his first seven games, Hagel is near the point-per-game mark (19 PTS in 20 GP). Hopefully you remained patient.

The Lightning could be seriously undermanned if all of Kucherov, Point, and Victor Hedman are out of the lineup next week. With Hedman injured and not expected back for another two weeks, Darren Raddysh has been on the top power play. Raddysh registered a power-play assist on Saturday, giving him six points over his last four games. Although Raddysh played just 17:54 on Saturday, his icetime has been way up recently, including a 27:38 game on Thursday against Edmonton. He can be added in leagues where a defenseman is needed, but his value will probably decline substantially once Hedman returns.

The Flyers scored three goals in a span of 26 seconds, which turned out to be the difference in their 6-3 win over New Jersey.

Tyson Foerster scored two of the three quick goals, while Noah Cates assisted on both of Foerster's goals while scoring one of his own.

Nico Hischier scored two goals while adding an assist for the Devils, while Jesper Bratt chipped in three assists.

Roman Josi returned to the Predators' lineup after missing the past month with an upper-body injury. Josi and the Preds were shut out 3-0 by the Avalanche.

Mackenzie Blackwood earned the 35-save shutout for the Avs, which was his first shutout and quality start of the season. While Blackwood was injured during October, Scott Wedgewood performed well enough to retain a greater share of the starts. That is why Blackwood was playing in just his fourth game of the season, even though he returned to game action on November 1. Blackwood was drafted as a top-5 goalie in Yahoo leagues, but he has not delivered on that return on investment because of the injury and Wedgewood's play. That could still change during the season.

Colorado has only one regulation loss in 21 games this season. That means that they have earned points in 20 of 21 games. Not surprisingly, the Avalanche are first overall in the league.

–

J.T. Miller missed Saturday's game against Utah with an upper-body injury. Miller is considered day-to-day with the injury, which is perhaps a cause for his drop in production (12 PTS in 22 GP).

Is Mikko Rantanen a dirty player? He may not have that reputation, as he has never been suspended in his career. However, he received his second five-minute major and game misconduct for a hit this week. On Saturday, it was a vicious hit from behind on Matt Coronato, who was fortunately able to return to the game. Rantanen wasn't suspended for hitting Alexander Romanov on Tuesday, but he might not be so lucky this time around.

Rantanen was also fined $2000 for embellishment on Thursday, suddenly turning heel in less than a week.

Jason Robertson has now scored goals in six consecutive games, scoring ten goals over that span. Robo is second in the league in shots on goal (96 SOG), adding six shots to his total on Saturday.

Although he was held without a point on Saturday, Miro Heiskanen logged 32:47, which was highest among any player on Saturday.

One major question for the Flames before the season was who would back up behind Dustin Wolf. The answer is Devin Cooley, who is factoring into the goaltending mix more than we thought. Starting his second consecutive game, Cooley stopped 28 of 30 shots in a 3-2 shootout win for Calgary. That's two consecutive wins and quality starts for Cooley, who posted an identical two goals against and 28 saves against Buffalo on Wednesday. Keep in mind that the Flames play against today (Sunday) in Vancouver, where Wolf is expected to start, so it's not as though Cooley has stolen the job away from Wolf.

Cooley now has a sparkling 1.85 GAA and .935 SV% in spite of receiving just two wins in seven games. I'm not rushing out to add him because it's a small sample size on a bad team, but I'm curious to see how much Cooley can cut into Wolf's workload. Cooley is an undrafted 28-year-old who has spent considerable time in the AHL and even the ECHL, so this is an accomplishment for him to even get this far.

Goalies used to be considered (and maybe still are?) the most colorful personalities on a hockey team. Maybe having a sense of humor helps when your job is to stop a hard rubber disc travelling at a dangerous speed. Cooley fits that stereotype to a tee. He is not your typical hockey interview. Not that I mind at all.

Cutter Gauthier is the NHL shots leader with 98, including six shots on Saturday. Gauthier scored the overtime winner and added an assist in the Ducks' 4-3 win over Vegas. Leo Carlsson is getting a lot of attention for his breakout season with 29 points in 22 games, but Gauthier isn't far behind with 26 points in the same number of games. Gauthier is only 21 while Carlsson is only 20, so Anaheim is one team being led by a youth movement this season.

Braeden Bowman has four goals in his first six NHL games. If you had never heard of Bowman before this season, that's because he was an undrafted rookie. He was mentioned in this offseason's Fantasy Prospects Report, but you probably also overlooked him because Vegas doesn't have a strong prospect pipeline due to its win-now philosophy. In his second season in the AHL, Bowman earned a promotion with seven goals and 12 points in 12 games. He has made good with top power-play minutes and a spot on Jack Eichel's line. Keep in mind that his role could decline once Mark Stone returns from injury, although he is proving he can hang at the NHL level.
