Fantasy Take: Hughes to Minnesota for Rossi, Buium, Ohgren, and a First

The Vancouver Canucks have traded star defenseman Quinn Hughes to the Minnesota Wild for center Marco Rossi, defenseman Zeev Buium, forward Liam Ohgren, and a 2026 first-round pick.
The Wild receive:
Hughes, the 2024 Norris Trophy winner and one of the league's top defensemen. The Wild are preparing to go all in this season and next by acquiring Hughes. They will also have just over a year and a half to convince Hughes that Minnesota is the best long-term home for his hockey career, as Hughes' contract will expire in 2027, and he has been reportedly interested in playing with his brothers in New Jersey. Don't expect an imminent announcement on a Hughes extension, as he cannot sign one until the summer of 2026. In the meantime, Hughes will join a Wild team that is trending upward with legitimate pieces they can build around like Kirill Kaprizov and Matt Boldy.
The Canucks receive:
Enough of a return that shows that they are finally willing to get younger instead of chasing win-now pieces, although they were never going to receive a player close to the caliber of Hughes. All of the assets in this deal are under the age of 25, which boosts a prospect base that has been below average for over a decade. Rossi in particular provides the Canucks with the center they were sorely lacking after the J.T. Miller trade last season, while Buium might become a "Hughes lite" that is already scoring at nearly a 40-point pace as a 20-year-old rookie. Like Rossi and Buium, Ohgren is a former first-round pick, but he is not as NHL-ready as the other two. The first-round pick will likely be in the later half of the first round and will supplement the first-half first-round pick the Canucks will receive this season.
Players impacted:
Stating the obvious, but Hughes will bolster the scoring in Minnesota. Since the 2019-20 season when Hughes was a rookie, no defenseman has more assists – not even Cale Makar. Imagine all the passes that will lead to goals for Kaprizov, Boldy, and others. The Wild power play is just outside of the top 10 (21.7%), so adding Hughes should elevate this power play into one of the league's best. This trade clearly benefits Kaprizov, Boldy, Joel Eriksson Ek, Mats Zuccarello, and even Hughes himself. The Canucks have lacked scoring punch this season, with their offensive struggles even impacting Hughes himself (1 PT in last 7 GP) – although that could have also been the rumors affecting him. This trade should be viewed as a win for those rostering Hughes, and he should be back to being a point-per-game producer for the rest of the season.
Rossi should fit in as a much-needed second-line center behind Elias Pettersson when both are able to return. Rossi is currently on IR, but he is now day-to-day and could make his Canucks debut as early as Sunday. Center is a major need for the Canucks, who were believed to be pursuing Rossi during the summer. The Wild didn't seem completely sold on him, but he has been scoring at a 60-point pace both this season and last. One winger in particular that Rossi could help at even strength if they are on the same line is Jake DeBrusk, who has registered just six even-strength points in 31 games. Other wingers such as Brock Boeser, Conor Garland, and Evander Kane have played with a revolving door of bottom-6 caliber centers and could receive a boost at even strength. However, that could be offset by losing Hughes, especially on the power play.
Buium has already spent time on the Wild's top power play, so it's possible that he could step immediately into the power-play role vacated by Hughes. In fact, it'll be either Buium or Filip Hronek, who has experience in a PP1 role. Hronek's even-strength production will be hurt by the departure of his high-scoring defense partner, but he could make up for that somewhat with additional power-play points. Buium, meanwhile, has registered eight of his 14 points on the power play, so the Canucks should view him as their long-term power-play specialist. He could be the key to this deal if he is able to reach his high ceiling one day.
Ohgren has zero points in 18 games this season after recording five points in 24 games last season. He is probably a bottom-6 winger for the Canucks this season, but he could be matched with Aatu Raty to form a young scoring line. Ohgren's upside appears to be as a second-line winger.
Players this helps, in order:
Kaprizov
Boldy
Eriksson Ek
Zuccarello
Hughes
Players this hurts, in order:
Canucks PP1 regulars (Pettersson, DeBrusk, Boeser, Garland)
Tom Willander

But how much does it help Zeev o wise one? Please tell the humble fantasy player looking to maximize on the hype of the trade.
If you’re looking for whether Buium’s value goes up or down, I don’t think it changes much. He will be on the Canucks’ PP1 soon if not now, similar to Minnesota.
