DFS Tuesday: Power Play Matchups for Montreal and Minnesota; Dahlin’s Upside, and More

Good morning, all! Alrighty, let's talk DFS but before we do, a quick PSA. I'm traveling for the holidays tomorrow (Tuesday), so this is coming at you guys a little early. Because of that, DraftKings currently does not have the tournaments open just yet, so I won't be able to provide you guys pricing. Still, we can guesstimate where the salaries might be…Cale Makar is the most expensive defenseman.

There's also a Detroit/Dallas game that has a 5:30 CST start, and without knowing if that game will be included in the main slate or not, I'm going to be avoiding it for the time being. (Editor's note: DK is including that early game on the slate.)

Thanks all for understanding, but I'm looking in my crystal puck right now, and I'm seeing money to be made out there! Let's dive in.

Slate Preview

Montreal Canadiens

I love the Montreal in this spot and can tell you all now that they'll be in my single-entry so long as the state of South Carolina allows DraftKings…which I'm pretty sure they do not. Either way, let's pretend that they do and it's Habs time. Boston is one of the "cold" clubs as far as defense goes up on the site, and like we always say, "trends are your friends". Boston is also taking the second-most penalties per game in the last 10 contests, and throughout that time frame they have the second-worst penalty kill. With all that in mind, I'm good to go with a Montreal power play stack as there's a chance this top unit sees a good amount of time on the man advantage. If you want to look at this club at more of a 5v5 build, both top two lines are in play as each has had around the same amount of offensive production in the last three games played. Just watch for the lineup slotting of new addition Phillip Danault.

Minnesota Wild

So, if Boston is taking the second most penalties in the last then, then who is the first? Without looking, I'll give you guys a hint – It's the team that the Wild are playing tonight. Figure it out? If you guessed the Tennessee Titans, you're so close(it's the Nashville Predators)! Now, Minnesota is going to be pricey tonight but there's ways around spending a pretty penny on this team in a good spot. I'm probably not looking to roster the Wild without Kirill Kaprizov or Matt Boldy, but at center you can add in Ryan Hartman for some salary relief, and I don't mind a pivot away from Quinn Hughes for Brock Faber who quietly has four points in the Wild's last six games. Taking away the Wild's last game against Colorado, this club has been on a heater with 21 goals in their last five games, with one of them being a six-goal game. Nashville's even strength defense has been fine, but if they're going to allow the Wild to get multiple chances on the power-play then I'll roll the dice that the Wild can fill the net.

Utah Mammoth

I wasn't sure where I wanted to go here as I went through each game but then I stopped on Utah. Core memory unlocked, the Mammoth beat the Avalanche in overtime not too far back and since then, the Avalanche have given up a good amount of high danger chances against at all strengths. This is a case where I'm not betting that the club with only two regulation losses and three more regulation wins than the '95 Wings had at this point are going to lose, but I am interested in getting at some Utah. They'll likely go overlooked and they have a fully correlated top line going into this matchup. In single-entry I'd give them some consideration but multi-entryis where I would want to at least have some shares of this club.

Defense

If Cale Makar isn't the most expensive defenseman on the board, then the person who sets the salaries must be off work this week. Quinn Hughes is never a bad play, but like we mentioned, there may be a pivot there with Brock Faber. Rasmus Dahlin is playing some of his best hockey right now, and the Buffalo power play has looked good with Josh Norris back, I don't mind him at all. I'm good with whichever Kings defensemen is running their top power play unit against the Kraken(it was Drew Doughty on Monday night), and I don't mind Noah Hanifin for Vegas who should see a good number of minutes. Darnell Nurse is a fine play tonight for the Oilers and for a cheap defenseman I would lean Jamie Drysdale.

Goalies

If you're not playing Utah and have an extra $8,200 – $8,400 in the bank, then either Colorado starter is good. Igor Shesterkin should see a good amount of volume against the Capitals tonight and honestly, I could get behind Logan Thompson on the other side of that matchup. For a cheaper goaltender, Dustin Wolf making this start against the Oilers is one that I could see getting to in multiple entry.

That's it for now, best of luck tonight everybody!

Wishing you all nothing but a safe and memorable holiday season.
