DFS Thursday: Toronto’s Matchup; Back-to-Back Islanders; Dahlin’s Reliability, and More

Good day, everyone! Last night's lineup didn't quite get there — I rolled out an Islanders four‑man stack with a Carolina two‑man and it just fell flat. But that's behind us. It's a new day and a new slate. I really like tonight's board: only one heavy favorite in Tampa Bay, which should openplenty of paths to unique builds. I might even gasp throw in some multi‑entry tonight. Getting wild over here.

Slate Preview

Toronto Maple Leafs

It's hard to be this deep into fantasy hockey and DFS without noticing how much frustration there is around this Toronto team in Leafsland. Regardless of the noise about Auston Matthews coming out of the Olympic break, he's produced in every game since returning — and in the one game he didn't record a point, he still fired eight shots on goal. An Auston Matthews one‑off at $9K is going to be popular, but it's still a strong approach. Pairing him with a defenseman and rolling Joseph Woll in net is another viable angle. I don't mind the idea of a Matthews–Nylander two‑man either, but for me, this feels like a slate where I'd rather chase pure volume and spread exposure elsewhere.

Winnipeg Jets

Okay, zag with me for a moment. Winnipeg's blue line is banged up, and in their last outing against Chicago they were coughing up pucks all over the neutral zone. If you're chasing the clearest spot on the slate, it's obviously Tampa Bay, and there's nothing wrong with going that route. But Tampa has been taking a steady stream of minor penalties since February 1, and that trend has popped up at other points this season too. Minnesota exposed it: one goal on a 4‑on‑3, one on a standard power play, and they rang the post twice on two more man‑advantage chances. If Winnipeg can get that kind of opportunity, I'm willing to take a swing. I do wish their top line were fully correlated, but here we are. The way I see it, you can mix and match any of the four forwards on the top power‑play unit and build from there. It's definitely a riskier angle, so in single‑entry I'd tread lightly, but in multi‑entry it's a perfectly reasonable leverage spot. No risk, no Porsche.

New York Islanders

I went with the Islanders last night, and I can see myself going right back to them tonight. Bo Horvat and Mathew Barzal are both sitting at $7K, and if I'm playing one, I'm playing both. They've looked strong as a duo since the break, generating enough volume that the shot bonus is very much in play. I don't think you need to force a full top‑line stack with Ondrej Palat, but if you want a cheaper add‑on, someone like Emil Heineman ($3,700) or even Casey Cizikas ($2,500) can work. I'd only dip that low if salary really demands it, but both have shown decent volume over their last ten games, even if the production has been inconsistent. What this build does offer is flexibility. Pairing the Isles with a full Buffalo top line fits nicely and still leaves room for two defensemen in the $6K range. There's nothing on the Kings' side that scares me off this matchup, making the Islanders a team I'm comfortable targeting again.

Defense

The top of my board is Rasmus Dahlin at $6K, he's been playing excellent and is at a great price for his recent production. If you're stacking the Isles, Matthew Schaefer is in play at $5,900 andIdon't mind his teammate Tony DeAngelo either sitting down at $4,300. I don't really have much interest in the $5K range, but this slate does offer us great options on the cheaper side with Thomas Chabot sitting at $4K being who I like best in that range. If you really need to save, I like Jake McCabe at $3,300 who is always in line for the block bonus and if you really really need to save you could look at Adam Peeke at $2,500.

Goalies

Like defensemen tonight, I don't really think that you should feel the need to spend up in net tonight. Honestly, I rarely do that anyways and tonight offers some decent cheaper options, below the $8K mark. I don't mind either goaltender in the Pittsburgh/Buffalo matchup; both are in play for me. Joseph Woll at $7,500 is interesting to me, I know he didn't have the greatest start last time out, allowing five goals, but prior to that, he had been fairly consistent. Ilya Sorokin at $7,400 is going to be popular given his price, but do think he might be one of the better plays on the slate.

That's it for now, best of luck tonight!
