Ramblings: Rantanen Returns, Tippett Scoring and Taking Shots, Karlsson Cashing In (Mar 29)

Brayden Schenn had his most impactful game as an Islander on Saturday, filling the statsheet in multiple categories as he has been known for throughout his career. In the Isles' 5-2 win over Florida, Schenn finished with a goal, two assists, five shots, two hits, and three blocked shots. Schenn entered this game with a more modest four points in ten games with his new team and hadn't recorded a point in his previous four games, so his acquisition by the Isles hasn't really stood out until this weekend.

With two assists on Saturday, Matthew Schaefer has five points over his last three games. Since March 1, no defenseman has more shots on goal than Schaefer (54 SOG in 14 GP). If you don't feel like doing the math, that's an average of nearly four shots per game. That's another impressive stat in what will likely be a Calder Trophy season. Another one: the 18-year-old Schaefer has also logged a minimum of 26 minutes per game in each of his last four games. That kind of trust takes years for many star defensemen to receive.

Speaking of shots, the Islanders took 24 shots in the second period and 40 shots total in this game.

Matthew Tkachuk is rewarding fantasy teams that were patient enough to roster him prior to his season debut on January 19. With two goals on Saturday, Tkachuk has recorded two points and four shots in back-to-back games. His second goal, complete with mouthguard dangling from his mouth, is too impressive not to share.

Nikita Kucherov missed the Lightning's 4-2 win over Ottawa because he was sidelined with illness. So who else than defenseman Emil Lilleberg should lead the Bolts in scoring on Saturday. Lilleberg scored a goal and added two assists with a plus-4, increasing his season point total by 50% in the one game. There's no action to take here, as Lilleberg consistently receives less than 20 minutes per game with no power-play time, even with Victor Hedman out of the lineup.

If you're looking for a Lightning defenseman benefitting from Hedman's absence, perhaps Charle-Edouard D'Astous is your guy. With a goal and an assist on Saturday, D'Astous has five points in his last three games. D'Astous is on the Lightning's second power play and has also been providing healthy doses of hits and blocked shots recently. D'Astous is rostered in only 1% of Yahoo leagues and 18% of Fantrax leagues, with the Lightning playing again today (Sunday).

With a goal and an assist on Saturday, Brandon Hagel has piled up 13 points in his last seven games. That includes five multipoint showings over his last seven games. Those who predicted that Hagel would be a bust before the season have been proven wrong, as he is scoring at over a point per game again (72 PTS in 67 GP).

Kucherov's absence on Saturday allowed Connor McDavid to take sole possession of the lead in the points race. McDavid scored a goal and picked up two assists, giving him 124 points compared to Kucherov's 121 points. The Art Ross race looks like it will be one to watch down the stretch. The Hart Trophy looks like it will be tightly contested this season as well.

Matt Savoie scored one of the Oilers' other goals in their 4-2 win over Anaheim. Savoie has now scored goals in three consecutive games, taking full advantage of lining up with McDavid at even strength. Savoie's goal on Saturday was his only shot in the game, but he had totaled 13 shots over his last four games. Savoie is rostered in only 4% of Yahoo leagues, which makes him an intriguing pickup down the stretch.

The third member of the current McDavid line is becoming an appealing bangers league option. Vasily Podkolzin assisted on Savoie's goal, giving him assists in back-to-back games. Although his point total alone (33 PTS in 74 GP) won't generate a ton of interest in fantasy leagues, Podkolzin adds to his appeal by averaging exactly three hits per game (222 Hits in 74 GP). Podkolzin is hanging around the top 10 in that category this season, and he has reached 200 hits in two consecutive seasons with the Oilers. His fantasy value has improved since being acquired by Edmonton from Vancouver, who for some reason couldn't find room for him in the lineup.

John Carlson assisted on both Ducks' goals, giving him seven points over his last three games. Carlson has averaged about 2.5 shots per game and 24:53 in icetime in seven games with the Ducks. He has also received more power-play time than Jackson LaCombe since joining the Ducks. Carlson is on the last season of his contract, so he is not certain to remain with Anaheim beyond this season. That should ease any long-term worries for those rostering LaCombe.

In 52 games, Troy Terry does not have a single hit. That's right. Zero hits. Can he remain hitless for the entire season? To give you an idea of how impressive (if that's the right word) Terry's ability to avoid hits is, the next-highest games-played total for a player with zero hits is four (shared by three players). By the way, Terry returned to the lineup on Saturday from a one-game absence due to a lower-body injury.

📢 advertisement:

Monday's Ducks/Leafs game could be a penalty box party, especially if Radko Gudas suits up. That is not 100% to happen, as Gudas was out Saturday with a lower-body injury. Although Gudas was recently seen in a walking boot, he reportedly "wants to play no matter what" to answer to his hit that ended Auston Matthews' season. Stay tuned.

Elias Lindholm and Pavel Zacha each scored two goals in the Bruins' 6-3 win over Minnesota. Over the past month, Zacha has been every-day start worthy with 11 goals and 19 points over 15 games. He has been thriving on a scoring line without David Pastrnak, which is a line that includes Casey Mittelstadt and Viktor Arvidsson. Mittelstadt finished the game with three assists, while Arvidsson had a goal and an assist. Arvidsson, who I mentioned yesterday as a possible weekend option, has 14 points over his last 13 games.

Ryan Hartman and Mats Zuccarello each scored a goal and an assist for the Wild. Both are currently playing on Kirill Kaprizov's line, with Hartman registering four points and eight shots over his last three games. Both players are rostered in fewer than one-quarter of Yahoo leagues and could be worth looking up.

By the way, both Hartman and Zuccarello earned Draisaitl Hat Tricks on Saturday (1 G, 1 A, minus rating).

–

Nikolaj Ehlers and Shayne Gostisbehere each scored a goal and added an assist in the Hurricanes' 5-2 win over New Jersey. Ehlers has had a highly productive month of March with eight goals and 17 points in 13 games. Seven of those points have been on the power play, where he has found his way onto Carolina's top unit. The only season in which Ehlers received more than 50% of Winnipeg's available power-play minutes was last season. Finally receiving top power-play usage, Ehlers has reached at least 20 power-play points both this season and last. Prior to that, his career high was 13 PPP. If you've been patient with Ehlers this long in your keeper league, good for you.

–

Igor Chernyshov scored two goals in the Sharks' 3-2 win over Columbus. Recently recalled again from the AHL, Chernyshov is back on a line with Macklin Celebrini and Will Smith. Each of these players recorded two points for the Sharks on Saturday. Chernyshov is worth considering in fantasy leagues (1% Yahoo) while he is on the Celebrini line.

–

If you took action on Mavrik Bourque after I mentioned him as a possible weekend add yesterday, congratulations. (Also, I'm glad someone is reading!) Bourque led the Stars with two goals and an assist on Saturday, also recording a plus-3. Mikko Rantanen did in fact make his return from injury in this game, which resulted in some line juggling for the Stars.

MATT DUCHENE – JASON ROBERTSON – MAVRIK BOURQUE

MIKKO RANTANEN – MICHAEL BUNTING – WYATT JOHNSTON

JAMIE BENN – COLIN BLACKWELL – JUSTIN HRYCKOWIAN

NATHAN BASTIAN – OSKAR BACK – ARTTU HYRY

📢 advertisement:

Bourque is still in the top 6 with a healthy dose of icetime (19:02), so the add recommendation (7% Yahoo) still remains in place. Meanwhile, Rantanen finished with a goal and an assist in his return. You shouldn't need me to tell you to activate him.

Erik Karlsson was in on all three Penguins' goals in their 6-3 loss to Dallas, scoring a goal and assisting on the other two. Karlsson has back-to-back three-point games with 21 points in his last 12 games, also reaching 60 points for the first time in three seasons. Karlsson could be in for a monster week next week, as Pittsburgh is the only team scheduled for the rare five-game week. For more on the schedule, check out the most recent Looking Ahead. If you are looking to maximize your games played, you'll see another Penguin listed there as a recommended add.

Sidney Crosby may not play five games next week. Unfortunately, Crosby missed Saturday's game and is currently day-to-day with a lower-body injury.

–

Bobby McMann with the Maple Leafs this season: 19 G and 32 PTS in 60 GP (0.53 PTS/GP)

Bobby McMann with the Kraken this season: 7 G and 11 PTS in 8 GP (1.38 PTS/GP)

I know, small sample size and all. But you can always share this with the Leafs fan that you know. McMann finished with a goal and an assist on Saturday, giving him one goal and at least three shots in three consecutive games.

Recently added to a line with McMann, Kaapo Kakko has 10 points over his last seven games. Kakko has run hot and cold throughout the season, but overall, he is on the best season-long pace of his career (0.62 PTS/GP).

Rasmus Dahlin has goals in back-to-back games and four goals over his last six games.

–

Speaking of the Leafs, they took a grand total of 13 shots in a 5-1 loss to St. Louis. Meanwhile, Joseph Woll had to face 38 shots. The way they are getting caved in, the Leafs should be considered a cushy soft matchup for the rest of the season.

Better late than never for Dylan Holloway. With a goal and an assist on Saturday, Holloway is coming through during the fantasy playoffs with seven points over his last six games. Pre-Olympic break, Holloway was producing at a half-point-per-game pace (17 PTS in 34 GP). Post-Olympic break, he is up to nine goals and 19 points in 15 games. He is establishing a pattern as a slow starter who dials it up as the season goes on. Last season, he started with 12 points in his first 24 games before revving it up to 51 points in his last 53 games.

Jimmy Snuggerud, who scored one of the Blues' other goals, has points in nine of his past 11 games and 14 points over that span. Beckett Sennecke, Ivan Demidov, and Matthew Schaefer are in the first tier of the rookie scoring race, but Snuggerud leads the second tier with 39 points in 60 games.

With two assists, Jake Neighbours snapped an eight-game point drought. Prior to Saturday, Neighbours had not been able to take advantage of the Blues' recent hot run (10-1-2 in past 13 GP).

There's nothing like a major international tournament to help Jordan Binnington find his game. Since the Olympics, Binnington has a 1.70 GAA and .925 SV% in six games. Pre-Olympics, Binnington had a disastrous 3.65 GAA and .864 SV% with only one of every four of his 32 appearances resulting in a quality start. No wonder Canadians thought Logan Thompson should be the starter!

–

Ivan Demidov, Alex Newhook, and Oliver Kapanen each scored a goal and added an assist in the Canadiens' 4-1 win over Nashville. Kapanen, who has four points in his last four games, isn't far behind Snuggerud in the second tier of the rookie scoring race with 37 points.

–

With a goal and an assist against Colorado, Gabriel Vilardi has six points over his last four games. Vilardi has also reached the 60-point mark for the second consecutive season.

–

This tweet/post must have been foreshadowing for Owen Tippett's hat trick against the Red Wings. Tippett filled numerous category boxes with three goals, one assist, one power-play point, and eight shots to give him back-to-back games with multiple points. Tippett has been firing the puck a ton recently with 48 shots over his last 10 games, which is more shots than any player since March 9. Not surprisingly, he has scored seven goals over that span. Tippett's ability to deliver both shots and hits (four consecutive seasons of over 100 hits) makes him a much better multicategory league option than pure scoring league option.

–

In Utah's 6-2 win over Los Angeles, Alexander Kerfoot and Logan Cooley each scored two goals, while Mikhail Sergachev recorded four assists. Cooley has now reached 20 goals in each of his first three seasons. Sergachev has reached 50 points in each of his two seasons in Utah and three of his past four seasons overall.

Beware of adding and starting any Utah players, as they are only one of two teams to play just two games next week (Nashville is the other).

–

Morgan Frost and Matt Coronato each scored a goal and added two assists in the Flames' 7-3 win over Vancouver. Coronato now has a five-game point streak in which he has seven points.

–

Aliaksei Protas left Saturday's game with an upper-body injury. Protas seemed to take the worst of a scary head-on-head collision with Nic Dowd. For more injury updates, check out Injury Ward, which appears on both Wednesdays and Sundays.
