Although the Stanley Cup Playoffs are wrapping up, the NHL offseason has been in full swing for a few weeks. Dylan Larkin's bombshell trade request kicked off the trade chatter and seems to be paving the way for other NHL players to do the same. Darnell Nurse and Brendan Gallagher are two other notable names who are looking to move on to greener pastures. Let's take a look at some more notable names who could be on the move this offseason. Here are the Top 10 Fantasy Trade Candidates of the offseason.
Honorable Mentions: Brendan Gallagher(Montreal Canadiens), Jake Debrusk(Vancouver Canucks), Ryan Hartman(Minnesota Wild), Kent Johnson(Columbus Blue Jackets), Shane Wright(Seattle Kraken), Sebastian Cossa(Detroit Red Wings)
10. Morgan Rielly, D, Toronto Maple Leafs
The truth is that Morgan Rielly was never a number-one defenseman on a contending team. Unfortunately for him, that was the role that he's been thrust into for the last decade in Toronto. Therefore, he's gotten a lot of backlash during his tenure. It appears as though it's finally the time that the Leafs are looking to move off him, one year after trading Mitch Marner. He's now past his prime, but Morgan Rielly can still play a key role on a young team.
9. Darnell Nurse, D, Edmonton Oilers
Darnell Nurse's mega-contract was a disappointment from the beginning, and it has only looked worse with time. Once a top-pairing defenseman, Nurse is now a borderline second-pairing blueliner. Now that he has formally requested a trade, it appears that his time in Edmonton is coming to an end. However, it won’t be easy to move off that massive contract without the Oilers retaining a large chunk of his salary. On a rebuilding team, Nurse could still be a serviceable first-pairing player, and the large minutes would make him worth a fantasy selection as he looks to revitalize his career.
8. Alexis Lafreniere, LW, New York Rangers
New York has a history of failing the development of their young players, and there is no better example than Alexis Lafreniere. Their former first-overall selection has shown flashes of brilliance but has never lived up to the hype. With the team moving in a new direction, they may give him a bigger role, which could see consistent minutes and production. However, there's also a strong chance they opt to move off Lafreniere along with the rest of the veteran Rangers core. Either way, he could be worth a late-round gamble in fantasy leagues.
7. Jordan Binnington, G, St. Louis Blues
Former Cup champion Jordan Binnington's time in St. Louis appears to be over. Despite being the starter for Team Canada and playing well, he lost the Blues starting job to Joel Hofer during the regular season. Paying the money on his contract for a backup doesn't make much sense for the team, and Binnington won't be content in that role either. They'll look to move him to a team where he can see more games. This would make him a relevant fantasy option once again.
6. Mason McTavish, C, Anaheim Ducks
McTavish was expected to be a centerpiece of the Ducks future core. The team indicated its belief in the player by signing him to a long-term deal. However, several players, such as Leo Carlsson and Cutter Gauthier, have emerged as stars up front. Furthermore, the addition of a veteran centreman in Mikael Granlund pushed him outside the top six. Things just never seemed to get going for this year for McTavish, and there is a potential rift between him and head coach Joel Quenneville. It's unclear where he fits into the team’s future forward group. At this point, they may opt to move him instead of banking on a rebound campaign, much like they did with Trevor Zegras.
5. Vincent Trocheck, C, New York Rangers
Many were surprised to see Vincent Trocheck remain on the Rangers roster following the trade deadline. He was one of the biggest assets on the market, and the team had already indicated its intent to sell. Trocheck is a veteran pivot who can still bring a lot of value to any contending team in the league. He will be moved; it's just a matter of when and where.
4. Jordan Kyrou, RW, St. Louis Blues
Along with Jordan Binnington, Blues winger Jordan Kyrou is one of the teams key players rumored to be on the trade block. St. Louis is entering a rebuild or, at the very least, a retool, and it seems as though he doesn't fit those plans. He is coming off the worst season since his rookie campaign. Kyrou saw his ice time diminished significantly this past year and wasn't put in a position to succeed under his new head coach. It appears that parting ways would be mutually beneficial for both parties. Fantasy managers who drafted Kyrou are still disappointed, but they should expect him to have a rebound year.
3. Matthew Knies, LW, Toronto Maple Leafs
Matthew Knies was almost involved in a blockbuster deal this offseason with the Maple Leafs bitter rivals in Montreal. According to several insiders, a deal was in place to send him to the Canadiens, but it fell just short of the deadline. However, Toronto now has a new management group, so it’s unclear if the deal is still on the table. But, with the Maple Leafs now selecting first overall and anticipated to take Gavin McKenna, they may be in the market to move off another winger as a result.
2. Nico Hischier, C, New Jersey Devils
In an ideal world, the Devils would like to hold onto Nico Hischier for the long-term. However, with his deal set to expire next season, the team doesn't want to risk losing their captain for nothing. The truth is, the Devils are nowhere near where they want to be after missing the postseason for the second consecutive year. They are headed towards a rebuild/retool, and it's unclear whether or not Hischier will be in it for the long haul.
1.Dylan Larkin, C, Detroit Red Wings
The biggest name on the trade market this summer is the Red Wings captain, Dylan Larkin. He requested a trade out of the motor city after a decade of missing out on the postseason. His three-team trade list will make a deal difficult, but it appears he has opened up to the possibility of other options. Larkin is a first-line center on the Red Wings, but would be an elite second-line pivot on a contender. He's on a reasonable cap hit at 8.7 million, which should help facilitate a trade. Larkin will be the most coveted and high-profile player on the market this offseason. While GM Steve Yzerman may try to play hardball, it's almost a certainty that Detroit will need a new captain next season.
