Injury Ward: Updates on Tavares, Jarvis, Sanderson, and more

What’s up, hockey fans? I am pleased to welcome you to the October 18, 2026 edition of the Injury Ward!
Before we get into it, some history was made this weekend by the Florida Panthers! After a rough start to the year, the Panthers have now won three straight and, on Saturday, became the first team in NHL history to have a natural hat trick in three straight games. Goal scoring is apparently not an issue for Florida at the moment, so start em' if you got em'!
Here are the key injury updates heading into the week:
John Tavares (C) – TOR – week-to-week
The Toronto Maple Leafs are going to be without arguably their most consistent and dependable forward for the next few weeks, according to TSN analyst Darren Dreger. Tavares exited the third period of the Maple Leafs' game Thursday after an extremely awkward collision with oft-injured Buffalo Sabres center Josh Norris (who also left the game a short while later and was placed in concussion protocol following a separate incident).
Tavares was off to a great start this year (2G, 5A, 7GP) after leading the team in goals last season, so his contributions on 2C/1PP will be missed. This does, however, make way for Gavin McKenna to get some 1PP time. While McKenna was held off the score sheet Saturday night along with most of the team, he did register four shots. With McKenna shooting over 15% on the year with a TOI of only 13:57, this is good news and very promising for anyone who’s been waiting for the Leafs' young rookie to get a legitimate shot to make an impact.
William Eklund (LW) – OTT – 10-12 weeks
Injuries like this are the worst. The player moves to a new team and gets an increased top-six and 1PP role. Their team goes on to beat the Boston Bruins, then beat the Leafs, and things start to look promising for said player and their new squad. Suddenly, their team loses to the lowly Detroit Red Wings. And in the following game, this player gets injured so badly they need surgery to their ankle and this player is now going to miss 2-3 months of hockey. This is the story of William Eklund, and it is a sad one.
The sample size is too small to say what kind of impact Eklund could have made with him only playing three full games (1G, 1A), but the Ottawa Senators are 6-3-0 to start the campaign, so you can't help but feel sorry for the 2021 first round draft pick. There are a few interchangeable options for the Senators to replace him, but it looks like the returning Andre Burakovsky will be covering the gap left by Eklund's departure until a permanent replacement is appointed.
Seth Jarvis (RW) – CAR – day-to-day (update)
Great news for Jarvis' fantasy owners as the Carolina Hurricanes embarked on a five-game Western Conference road trip this weekend with Jarvis assuming his regular spot on the team bus (wait, do the reigning champs get a private plane?) While there was hope he would suit up right away, he has not been medically cleared yet and Jarvis did not play Saturday versus the Winnipeg Jets. His next opportunity comes Sunday night (tonight) versus the Calgary Flames, with matchups versus Vancouver and Edmonton following shortly after.
Roope Hintz (C) – DAL – day-to-day
Hintz had quite the eventful third period on Saturday. First, he buried a wrister from the left circle at the midway point of the period to make it 4-0. Then, Hintz took a puck off the right hand/wrist area late in the period and was examined after the game with no further updates being provided on his condition. The Dallas Stars do not play until October 20, so owners, there is no need to panic just yet.
On the year, Hintz has put up an astonishing 18.8% shooting percentage, with three goals and two assists in eight games played. When healthy and in his groove, Hintz can be a tremendous asset to any fantasy team. If Hintz suddenly becomes available because someone in your league is anxious to fill their roster with active players (and they don’t follow the amazing DobberHockey team), I would strongly suggest you consider adding him to your roster if the injury news updates are favorable.
Jake Sanderson (D) – OTT – day-to-day (update)
To finish up the article, I’d like to give Sanderson's fantasy owners some encouraging, borderline good news, as we come out of the weekend. Sanderson did not travel with the team on its current road trip and did not play Saturday, but Hockey News analyst Graeme Nichols spoke with head coach Travis Green prior to Saturday’s tilt and it looks like the estimated date of return for Sanderson is Wednesday, October 21 against the Florida Panthers.
