Fantasy Take: Wright Traded from Seattle to Nashville for Wood

The Seattle Kraken have sent forward Shane Wright to the Nashville Predators in exchange for forward Matthew Wood.
This is a straight swap of prospects where a fresh start could be beneficial for both – particularly Wright. Comparing the two, Wright is 22 and was the 4th overall pick in 2022, while Wood is 21 and was selected 15th overall in 2023. Both players have played under 200 NHL games, so a final verdict on this trade won't be known for several years.

Wright reportedly requested a trade during the offseason, as he had not been happy with his lack of usage. He has not averaged more than 14 minutes per game in any season in Seattle, while his four points in 14 games this season represents the second consecutive season where his production has fallen. The good news for him is that Nashville lacks depth up the middle, whereas Seattle is more committed to Matty Beniers and Berkly Catton at the center position. Wright may be worth taking a flier on with the deal, as he is the more NHL-ready player, has higher upside, and could benefit more in the short term. However, Nashville isn't known as a strong organization for developing scorers.
Meanwhile, Wood is a slightly younger power forward (6-4, 202 lbs.) who may be more comfortable in a Seattle system that eases younger players into the lineup that Wright was. Wood can play the wing and could even move into Wright's spot on a line with Catton and Kaapo Kakko. After scoring 17 goals and 30 points last season, Wood has just three points in 14 games this season. Seattle won't need to rush him, as their offense has been surprisingly strong in the league's top 10 (3.71 GF/GP). Wood is still a solid keeper to retain, but more patience may be needed as he has not yet hit 100 NHL games.
